While glassing with a lightweight spotting scope is a ball head better than a pan tilt tripod head? Is it just a personal preferance?

I can only speak about the differences when using cameras. For light weight and packing the ball heads are generally smaller. I can also make movements in different planes much easier then with a pan tilt.

Like Tahqua I can only speak from camera experience but they should be similar. I much prefer a ball head. A good one will be a lot easier to use than pan/tilt. Make sure the one you get has a friction adjustment so you can move the binoculars but they still stay put without you holding them. Only negative to ball heads is they are more expensive.
