Gentlemen:
I am new to this site, been shooting and reloading for years, 40 to be exact. I just bought a new .223 bolt action varmit rifle (Savage 12FV) and want a scope for it. I own Leupold, Burris, Nikon, Sightron SIII ( the bomb ) and Millet scopes. I also have 2 BSA scopes on a muzzle loader and one on a 270 WIN. I am looking at the Contender 6-24 and the new Catseye 6-24, both side focus units. I don't want to sink a house payment in another scope. ( Wife is ill over the Sightron).Bandito Got any opinions, suggestions or experience with scopes under $300.00, I would like to hear it. I shoot mainly 200 to 500 yards. Thanks for your time and input, it will be greatly appreciated. (Fixed power units are NOT AN OPTION).

Thanks:

You could try this BSA that is on special from SWFA, this sites sponsor.

I'm not a big fan of cheaper optics. I just gave a Vortex, that was on special, a try and I am reasonably impressed. The BSA might be worth a go, too. It might not be great but it may turn out to be more than serviceable, too.

You might get lucky and get a very good BSA.  I have a Sweet .22 that is as good as I could ask for.  The BDC is right on.  I really like mine.  I've seen too many and heard of too many bad experiences to recommend BSA.

However, the Swift is a "sleeper", better than price would suggest with an outstanding warranty.  Glass is better than anything I've found in it's price range and it is a solid, consistent performer.  In your price range it would leave enough for a good set of rings.

I advise steering clear of the BSA stuff.

In the under $300 catagory, the Weaver V16 or Bushnell Thophy 6-18X40 are excellent scopes. I know it's not the 24X that you're looking for on the upper end. But a higher quality scope with a bit less power is always a better choice than a higher mag. scope with poorer optics/mechanicals.

If you can put away 3-4 more $20 bills from your $300 figure, the Sightron SII 6-24 would be my first recommendation.

    Good shootin'.   -Al
