before a fall.

I removed the scope from the Lott a couple of weeks ago, put it on the WinMag.  I have always prided myself in how few shots it took to zero after mounting a scope myself, once I learned to do it properly.  Today I got back around to sighting it in.  Well, I knew I had set it up properly, so I was just going to sight in at 25yds and move over to my personal 100yd range.  I didn't bore sight because it was ONLY 25yds. I took a shot and couldn't even see where the impact was... quite unusual with a 458 WinMag, if I do say so.  I took another shot and thought I saw dirt downrange to the left, so I made some gross adjustments and fired again.  Couldn't see the impact... AGAIN.  By the time I finally came to my arrogant senses ( I KNEW it could not be MY fault... must be this new rifle or the scope) I had fired 8 rounds.  I went in the house, disgusted and took a break before starting disassembly to see what was screwed up with this *&(^#&(_B rifle.  I took the scope off and thought... maybe those mounts are no good... I'll just put the ones off the Lott on there.  Mount screws almost fell out in my hand when I touched them.  I forgot I had just set the mounts on there without tightening them up.  Well, that MIGHT explain the bouncing around everywhere every time I fired with a different, almost unfindable impact point.  MIGHT.  OK, I calmed down, took everything apart, and mounted the scope properly.  Once it was PROPERLY mounted and all screws properly tightened, I BORESIGHTED it.  Adjustments equaled to several feet off at 25yds.  So, it only cost me, at todays ammo prices, about $30 to figure out what a dummy I was, now it will cost a little more to zero the rifle.  I can't do it today, because the only place that sells WinMag ammo in this area is closed today.  So, due to arrogance, impatience, hardheadedness, and whatever other names I can think of to call myself, I wasted TIME and MONEY, out of foolishness.

Patience is learned, not granted.  I think I learned some today, or more likely remembered some.  Do it all right the first time, it costs less and is less embarrassing.  Good thing I didn't tell my wife, I would NEVER hear the end of it.  I know everyone here is MUCH more understanding...

Bummer!  What a crummy day.  I had a great day at the range with my 22-250.  Was hitting the 1 foot gong at 500 yards in a 15 mph gusty cross wind.  I was very happy.

Sorry you had a bad day of it though.

Being the epitome of patience that I am... I couldn't wait.  I used some of the ammo I was going to take hog hunting in a couple of weeks.  Put the scope on properly, ensured everything was torqued properly, zeroed at 100 in 4 rounds.  Dang, I hate doing dumb stuff.
Since my wife and daughter accidentally threw away my data book with data on all my rifles, it takes a bit more shooting than it used to.  I have to recompile years of data, pro... lots of shooting, con...lots of shooting (cost).

This stuff happens. I also fitted a scope to a friends rifle the other day. Got it zeroed and then we started shooting. Impact point kept on moving and I could not figure out why. After packing up we decided to take the scope off.....and yes, the scope screws were loose. I felt like the village idiot...

Re-zeroed today: zeroed in 2, dead bulls on the 3rd and every subsequent round fired.

And, since they were reloads, it weren't expensive at all!
