I've been lurking around Optics Talk for awhile now and finally decided to ask for some advice.
It seems that most of you prefer Leica over Swarovski & Zeiss....so do I (after tons of reading & mind numbing research.)
I'm looking for a lifetime, do it all binocular. I will be using them to hunt in the hills of West Virginia, the fields of Ohio, the forests of Saskatchewan and the various terrain in West & South Texas for Whitetail and possibly New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado & Wyoming for Elk.
I've narrowed it down to a set of Trinovid or Ultravids in an 8x or 10x.(I prefer the 8x50mm for low light performance). Are the Ultavids worth the extra money? Is there a noticeable difference between the two? Is a 50mm objective necessary for low light performance with glass this good? Will the 8x be adequate for the areas I'll be hunting?
I need all the expert advice I can get before plunking down this kind of money.
P.S. Does light cleaning scratches affect the performance of the bins in any way?
Thanks in advance... |

I have been a lurker as well, and likewise Ultravids are on my wish list. I am going for the 10X42s. I think unless you hunt IN the woods almost exclusively, you would be better off with the 10X, especially when hunting in the mountains out west. As for 42 vs 50mm, I prefer the smaller for portability. I haven't compared them directly, but I would think at this level, you would satisfied with the 42s, as the actual difference should be small. Although I must admit I have some 10X50 swaros that are really bright, but they are usually at home or in my pack, becasue I hate to carry them, as I hate bino suspenders and you simply can't carry them around your neck without bino suspenders.

B&C Buck pretty much summs up my own view on the subject.

I recently bought a pair of leicas for many of the same reasons. But I got the geovid brf 10x42's. I have come to realize the need for rangefinding out west and Alaska; why carry two things when one will cover both tasks. I too decided that although it's a lot of $, I had bought and sold several pair of other optics and decided to be done wishing. I am thus far very happy with these and can't wait til the up-coming hunting season.
