Heavier is not always better! and all the above is good to go on! that is the better part.
edited for this a heavier bullet is almost always going to pass right through an animal and if it does not hit something it will not expand well and you could be doing some tracking not a bad thing and every one should do this at least twice, but it's always best to be dead right there! and a lighter bullet will generally expand better for different reasons one being more velocity. this is not always true but mostly, when it comes to elk size game then I think 165's are minimum, with 180's the 0r 200 a fine choice, all with the exception of bullets like the Barnes, fail safe, new Nosler E-tips and the like, again.. IMO.. and everybody has one.... kinda like a$$-hole$. Edited by rifle looney - May/08/2009 at 17:36 |

The 180 wouldn't tear a skunk hide up as much as a 150.

when you shoot a skunk dont you wanna inflict as much damage as possible?? i know i do, so when it comes to varmints you gotta reach for that 125gr bullet. |

HECK NO pyro! Skunk hides worth at least a few dollars when furred up right. Opossum and pole cats helped pay for my trapping supplies. Need the 180's in case they get out of the trap and charge ya.

I shot a skunk once after the SOB sprayed me for no reason....243, 95gr NBT went from stem to stern, gutted the little varmint, but he marked me for a long time. I've only had major extermination wars with bumble bees prior to that event, but that skunk changed my perspective. I won't run over them crossing the road, but if I have a rifle, they take precedence over even deer.

I think they have pop-off valves on'um and when too much pressure builds up it blows.

Always have skunk probablems around my place in the spring. Many years ago shot one out the bedroom window - bad idea. Never got in my garbage again or sprayed the dog but couldn't sleep in the room for a week and the wife was really pissed!

my wifes cousin is an avid trapper and he came up with a device that allows you to dispatch of a skunk in a trap without getting sprayed. its basically a needle and syringe on a 8ft pole that is loaded with acetone, one shot of that in the lungs and they wont spray for some reason.

Hey....I have one of those! Gonna watch it thought... The valve has a tendancy to pop off when being cleaned.

bp, that hairdo makes me want to get my head shaved.
However, what does all this skunk talk have to do with a 30-06??? We could use one to shoot each strand of that hair... |

I knew that wasn't your hair... and skunks don't bother me, as long as I get to shoot them.

my 30-06 has always like 165/168 boat tail soft point. I really like the hornady 165 BTSP - great on paper and great for meat. Excellent accuracy for stock ammo.
Good luck.
