Can anyone tell me if their is a substantial difference in the SLC's vs the EL's. I notice that the EL's are lighter and that they have a closer focus difference, but is there a substantial difference in the glass? Also, are the SLC's better than a top of the line Pentax or Zeiss classic? I am looking for a 10x40ish binocular and question whether it is worth the $1000 difference over Zeiss Classics or $1200 over the Pentax

I actually prefer the cheaper SLCs over the ELs because of the feel and handling. They simply feel more like what I am used to. I think they are both better than the Classic or the Pentax. I assume you mean the SPs. Whether they are $1,000.00 better is open for debate. I think the SLcs are priced right and are superior to the Zeiss Victorys and the Leica BNs. I do not think that The ELs are as good as the Higher-end Leicas and Zeiss FLs.

I recently have been doing some side by side comparisons of the ELs vs. the SLCs. To me the ELs have slightly better glass than the SLCs. They are noticably sharper but it is not alot of difference. I personally think that the ELs are overpriced although they seem to be great optically. I also believe that the SLCs are probably more durable and would hold up better than the ELs. I will say that I like the SLCs feel but I prefer the Leica Trinovids because they are slightly sharper to my eyes although the difference isn't enough to argue about. I agree with ranburr that the top of the line binos right now are the Leica Ultravids and the Zeiss FLs and both can be had for less than $1500. The ELs are right up there optically but they are a good bit more expensive (around $1700).
Yes the SLCs and the Leica Trinovids are better than the Pentax or Zeiss Classics although the Zeiss classics are a great bino for there price. My recommendations would be Leica Trinovids or Swaro SLCs if staying under the $1100 mark and Leica Ultravids or Zeiss FLs for about $350 more. Hope this helps. |
