I have a SBH in .44 mag. I have a 4x swift on now, but am very reluctant to hunt with 4x. Besides, at the ranges I plan on beginning to use the .44 (50 yds. or less), I believe that a red dot may be the way to go. I was leaning towards a Burris speed dot 135 or similar. Any suggestions, are these worth having as opposed to a 2x pistol scope??? Thanks for any help!

dots are faster on target when the handgun is used in either the weaver or turret stance, on action type targets, optics if target shooting. not because the dot is any less accurate, but most dot sights don't usually have the clarity and contrast as a good pistol scope, and some of the less expensive can have glare from reflected objects in back of the shooter.

I like the pros of the red dot that you mentioned. My reluctance with a regular pistol scope is just that, getting on target quickly. I will be using the SBH for deer and maybe hogs. Any recommendations on a good red dot? A lot of folks recommend Aimpoint. I have no doubt they are very good, but look a little big.

Unlike my better half, I don't like to rely on batteries.

I use a small doctor (when they were making them for tasco) on one target hand gun -- very fast-- C-more is the fastest- would recommend sizes greater than 28 mm to compliment the reason for using it in the first place, (I think 48 is the biggest nowdays). as you move more to aimpoint types the more you move toward a scope, pistol hunting is an extreme-- go all the way--going back to rifle methods sort of a step back, (even though I have 2x leo, 2x burris, 2x7 burris, 4x leo pistol scopes) past 2x they are pain to use off hand.

I like the 2x Leo I have on my SRH. It is faster than my other scopes to pick up.
C-more is a top pick for handguns, as is the Aimpoint. I would spend the money on the Aimpoint for the reasons Dale mentioned. Also I would get a 2moa vs. a 4moa since the 44 mag is capable of 100 yard shots in that gun. I've gone back and forth with my Aimpoint and my 2x Leo and the Leo is on to stay. |

I have a Super Black Hawk Hunter Bisley in 44
I have used a 2-6 Bushnell Trophy but want to go with a lighter, quicker setup I have an aimpoint compc3 2MOA and tried one 30mm Ruger ring, no go, not stiff enough, groups at 25 yards were horrible and the gun will shoot 1" at 75 yards.. I tried a small Millet 1" today, lasted 50 rounds I don't like having the scope/red dot out on the barrel, makes it front end heavy and harder to holster I have thought very seriously about tapping the top of the action and screwing in a very low profile weaver mount and trying an Aimpoint microdot I want as low of a profile as possible with the optic over the cylinder now, I have thought about having a machinist buddy make me a lower "ring" for the Aimpoint 30mm ring and having it mounted directly to the top of the gun about the cylinder I may try one of the Jack Weigand mounts and see if I can live with them first, though, I would prefer a lower mount I may try one of the Burris Fastfires, maybe Also, Trijcon will be introducing 2 new Mini Red Dots at the shotshow one battery powered, the other tritium and fiber optic like an acog they should be the cats meow :) came across a pic the other day, will try to find again and post |

forgot to mention, the Ultradot is reported to be very tough and holding up on big bore handguns, have used one before as well

+1 ! I have a Leupold 2X on my Freedom Arms .454 and a Ultradot Matchdot on my S&W 629 light hunter .44mag The optic is great for target shooting but for hunting I would reccomend a red dot. I got a Ultradot Matchot 30mm, if you read around you'll find it has a very good reputation. The Matchdot has 4 dot sizes but for hunting I would get the standard Ultradot 30mm. You would save money and have a 4MOA dot size which is good for any kind of target and distance. |

I am quite happy with an Aimpoint on my 44mag SBH. ( See the Sample list for the same camo model with a 4 MOA dot.) I too view it as a short range gun (50-75 yards). I have scopes on most of my Contender barrels and the red dot is quite user friendly when compared to the scopes.

Just go with a 2 power red dot scope and end the dilemma.TruGlo has one as do others.
Good Luck
