Does anyone know why some military sniper pictures show a hole punched in the center of their scope caps? I have to assume that it is to allow a quick point blank shot during stalking when the covers may be closed?

They allow for the scope to be used at shorter ranges. This is a technique employed for the use of bore sighters as well.

I always thought that it was for protection of night vision attachments. I have no background but the same type of small hole is used on night vision to cut the amount of light to keep from overloading the tube in night vision devises. So I learned something here. Thanks Cyborg

it acts to reduce glare in bright light, and increases the depth of field considerably on higher mags, where some is usually lost. it does exactly the same thing as an iris in a camera lenses by "stopping down". Burris had a line of scopes that had a built in iris about 15 years ago. |

Thanks guys,
Is there a standard hole size? Is it only done to the objective cap?

It is done to the objective only. Tens, and Dale, brought up points that I hadn't even considered. I'm such a SLACKER.... I'm unsure of the exact hole size but I believe it to be 3/16 inch.

actually you can use a rectangle and get the same results. any size hole will have some results, but you reducing the exit pupil dia. accordingly. this is an ad hoc fix not a recommended thing, the reason a pin hole camera's picuture is in focus, (pin in the side of a box) works is because the small pin hole gives a very large depth of field in relation to the size of the film negative being used.

there are other answers of course
and it is the military so
the lens caps are frozen shut
too lazy to clean the lens, just cover it
great chick magnet
do it now so you won't have to do it later.
so you can sleep in.

I always thought that was to prevent the scope from casting a reflection/glare and giving away the sniper's position. It's interesting to know there are other reasons.
