I'm considering gettting an 870 slug gun, but it's not drilled for a scope. How accurate are the wrap-around mounts for slug guns?

if you get one that fits snug, and the barrel is trued with the receiver,(seldom occurs) it is possible it get as much accuracy as that combination will allow. about 2 " or so at 50 yds. the saddles work best when shooting a dot sight at something like steel targets in action shooting.

The mounts are going to be fine as long as they are properly installed, the accuracy is moderate at best when shooting sabots, the plastic seldom comes off precisely enough during the sight in for an accurate zero, sticking with the same loads will help some but the slugs are going to be inherently inaccurate. 50 yards as Dale stated will yield 2-3 inch groups at best anyway you slice it. I would look at a pistol scope with a fixed power of around 2 or 3, there are also some nice slug gun scopes as well. You can also have the reciever tapped for scope bases, which a good gun smith will make sure is aligned with the bore, this would be my first choice of action, unless the barrels are interchangeable as is with my Mossy.

I had the exact setup your talking about 15years ago, unless they have made some large improvements in the design, I would stay clear. This setup causes aggrevation, wasted bullets and range time and sore shoulder. It's really not all that bad, but don't expect groups better than say 2-3 inches.

I already have the saddle mount on an 870 turkey gun that I was going to take off & put on the slug gun if it's accurate.

Just have it drilled and tapped for a scope. I have the same gun had my gunsmith drill and tap it for 60 bucks and I have never had a problem, have a Leupold 2x7x 33 shotgun scope on it and have killed many deer with it.

The down side of most slug guns is the barrel and reciever are not one piece if you take the barrel off and clean it from the rear when you put it back on it may be close but its not a solid one piece set up. There are some slug guns that do have the barrel drilled and tapped - encore pro hunter but it uses a special base do not use the standard base that goes on all other encore barrels or the screws will go through into the chamber. Mossberg also makes a bolt action with drilled and tapped reciever. There are some single shot H&R I believe that have the base screwed to the barrel. The cantilever system looks good but put a scope on it put it in a solid rest and press lightly on the back of the scope you will have about a 4 foot shift in where the crosshair points at 100 yds. The saddle type base is actually fairly solid since the screws that hold it go through the reciever and bolt down tight - the down side is damage to the finish especially if moisture gets between the alloy mount and the blue steel reciever. Honestly the open rifle sights on slug guns work fairly well and are fixed to the barrel. Slug guns that I have used and I have tried several are inherently innacurate. I have the Encore pro hunter set up and it is about the best I have found. An Aimpoint red dot seems to work very well with it. I had a 1x Burris on it this morning but wasnt really happy with that set up at 100 yds, so I will probably pick up another Aimpoint 9000L and some 30mm rings for it. I grew up shooting deer with rifles in Texas and Muzzleloaders seem to give me more acceptable performance than shotguns for Iowa hunting. Also note that Mossberg slug guns have the reciever drilled and tapped - so given the option of paying $60 to drill and tap a remmington or paying about $250 for a new Mossberg slug gun I might wind up with a new Mossberg.

The 60 dollars included pinning the barrel which stops the movement. I hunted in Maryland for a period of time and shotgun was all that was allowed. I have now switched to a muzzelloader which is much better than a slug gun, at least double your distance if not triple and more accurate.

Plus One on the Musket they beat the hell out of a shotgun. TC Omega with Barnes sabbots and 120 to 150 grains of tripple 7. clean it after each shot one wet patch then one dry patch, always put grease on the breech plug threads. These kill deer at 200 yds just as well as a 30-06. Figure 11 inches of drop from a 100 yd Zero to 200 yds.
