I'm about to order a scope and mounts for a 10/22 that I building and I'm hoping y'all can give me a little advice. I've been reading that folks here are putting the Simmons Pro-Air scopes on 10/22s. I called RifleScopes today to ask whether or not they would hold up to the recoil and was told "no". However Chris has posted that he recommends them for this application. It seems that there's some miscommunication between the sales force and Chris. Has anyone had a Pro-Air fail due to suspected recoil issues?
Secondly, the rings. I'm planning on using a Power Custom base ( 6 cross slots, ~ $15). I've been reading that folks really like the Burris Zee rings. Since the objective of the scope is 40mm, I'm thinking I need to go with the high rings. Has anyone been able to use the mediums with this setup?
Thanks, Jeff |

ChipperG, I just put a Simmons ATV 4.5-14x42 on a new 10/22 and really like it. I used the Ruger stock base and the rings that came with the scope. Someone said that they are Weaver mediums. The scope sets about 1/6" above the barrel with this combination. I tried to use the Weaver T09 base which is highly recommended over on RFC and the scope cleared the barrel but touched the back iron sight. I have the Burris Signature Zee's (medium height) on my Marlin 917V and think that they will also work. You don't want the scope higher than necessary. Lakes

If your building the 10/22 using a better barrel and stock, take advantage of the opportunity, use something like a 3X9 EF Leo

I'm not opposed to investigating another scope. Are you referring to the Leo ERF scopes? A little pricey when I consider what I'm spending on the rest of the rifle. Although I'm very cognizant of you get what you pay for.
A more general question is how does one ensure that the scope rings are tall enough to keep the objective off of the barrel?

I have a simmons pro-air (6-18)on my 10/22T, with a power customs base also. I am using weaver Med. mounts (wal-mart) and have about 1/16" with cap on I am happy with the combo,I don't know of any recoil problems using a spring gun scope on a firearm I do know you can KILL a scope quickly the other way around!
ps. also happy with the pro-air 4x12 on my Magnum class air rifle.

Chris,
From your descriptions of the scopes above, am I to understand that the Weaver 3x9a/o is clearer and brighter than the Loopie 3x9EFR?

Leo uses a Maximum transmission index that gives a different hue to the coloration of the preceived target. In effect a warmer tone, much in the same manner as Kodak uses warmer color tones (more red) in the people pictures than say Sony or BASF. This is interpreted to some observers as a "muddier" view or in other words the other product is clearer. However I am unable to get an accurate definition of the word clear or brighter as it pretains to scopes from anyone. Spectrophotometric techinques only measure one wavelength thus transmission figures are not accurate in accross the board comparisons. If one can say that some scope is clearer than such and such Leo, then I contend along the same line of reasoning that Leo's are less "fatiqueing" than that same scope comparision because of the same reason (the are less clearer). If one were to compare the a grid of evenly spaces lines say 1 mm wide in say a 25mm space at some distance and resolve the count of lines until the observer could no longer see it, (by increasing the distance or making the lines progressively smaller) one scope may perform this task better-but at what cost to eye fatigue. I use the Leo on a Fajan Silhoutte stocked Set trigger 10/22 with a Volquertson tension barrel for 200 round practice shot sessions on 1 '' squares at 50 yards, off hand, without eye fatigue. Other scopes I have tried to me at least gave eye strain and occular headaches.
