I was wondering if there were any recommendations as to which scope I
should get for the Bushmaster Varminter Rifle. For right now, I
am only going to use the rifle for targets with the possibility of
moving to varmints later. I was looking at the SS Scopes because
they seem to have good reviews and fit my pocketbook. I was
thinking about a 16x or 20x, but I am not sure of what distance I will
be shooting at, so should I just go with a 10x and maybe switch to a
higher power later? Also in case you could not tell I am fairly
new to rifles, I have always been more of a pistol kind of guy but want
to learn the ropes and eventually get an actual rifle. Also, does
anyone have any feedback on the Bushmaster Varminter? I have
heard that it is an awesome gun, but always like to hear more feedback
before I purchase.
Question to the SWFA guys, I live up in DFW area and was wondering, do you stock most of the scopes in the store so I could just come by and pick up or are they stored at a warehouse and I need to order or call first? Thanks for any help. |

Could go with the Status quo here and just say yup. But, you bring up honest questions-so- You must determine if your gun is capable of delivering the performance of a higher power scope other wise all you get is a closer picture with less angle of subtension (less background). First question do you handload? If not you must find a reliable supply of rounds that in your gun, is the most accurate. I'm quessing by your novice comment (I'm still laughing at the "get an actual rifle"- what a bushmaster is not an actual rifle) that you don't reload. Settle on the level of satisfaction of that group size, now satisfy yourself that the gun will statistically shoot these groups. Now that you have an independant variable to work with you can actually do something with testing scopes. Of course nobody does this its to scientific and no fun. So next step- get the most expensive scope you can buy. Obviously this will include, at some level, a grouping from most of the manufacturers. (This is probably were you have already skipped to). The purchase you have suggested would certainly weed out bad loads and the 20X will certainly allow you to see a 22 cal hole at 100 yds. to see if you are grouping but the trigger (more accurately the slow lock time on the hammer fall-about the same as a flint lock rifle) will take a lot a practice to determine if it is the gun or your shooting technique that is causing the large groups. While it certainly is possible to shoot small groups you won't know which of the dependant variables is the problem. Maybe a 10X. What the group size actually went down. How can that be? The random statistical errors in sight alignment have been eliminated. You can't watch yourself jiggle and the statistical process of the standard deviation of your guns shot groupings now determines the precision. One of the reasons such good groups can be shot with plain old iron sites. Make sure that the model and brand you do choose has the stainless barrel, non-chrome lined, heavy barrel. (Or you could just get a Remington 700 varmiter boly and have the confidence of knowing that its never the gun, usually). |

the varminter is one nice, accurate rifle. try soem winchester white box 45gr varmint packs from wally world, they are about 11-12$ for 40 rounds, and maintain 1/4"@100 in my RRA varmint. as for the scope, on my RRA i have the SS10X42, and i see the holes at 100 yards just fine, and i also used it to kill a Ghog at 673 yards with it, so seeing a groundhog at that distance thorugh it isnt a problem for me, but i also have very good eyesite. you migh twant to move up to the 16X if your going to be shooting varmints past 500 yards.

Everything is in stock and you are welcome to come on down and take a look.
I think you will like the 10x better as the 20x42 has a very small exit pupil and a narrow field of view. |

I am also getting ready to mount a scope on my varminter. Since this will mainly be a benchrest gun, I am looking at getting the scope mounter further forward than the normal top of the ar allows. Have looked at the ARMS mounts the allow forward mounting. I think model 39? Comments?

orchemo, had the same problem I got a yankee hill machine forward extension for my burris 8-32 black diamond about 45$. it extends the existing rail about 3 inches and it is the same highth as the scope risers that come with that rifle so I used one scope riser for the rear ring and the extension for the front ring and it works perfect man what a tack driver 3/4 inch group at 200 yrds. 55 gr vmax and 25 grs of win 748 in lake city brass. |
