I am the proud owner of Larues new OSR (308 AR-10 style rifle).  I am in the process of selecting a scope that will last the rifle its lifetime.

The mission of the rifle will be both competition and operational.  Shots will not be taken outside of 500 yards.  I want a real quality optic that will give me good close ups of my target within 500 yards and will provide good clarity and low light situations as I have blown my budget on my rifle and night vision will not be part of my setup.

My question is this;  I have decided on either the Nightforce 2.5 x 10 x 32 or the 3.5 x 15 x 56.  The prices are almost identical.  I would give up the Zero stop option going to the 3.5 but I would be gaining increased low light capability and magnification with the 3.5 which the 2.5 doesn't give me.  Am I missing something else?  Is the 3.5 overkill for my specified operational envelope?  As I said, the prices for both of these scopes is almost identical which makes me wonder, why does the 2.5 cost as much as the bigger and better scope?

As you can tell I have a lot to learn still regarding my setup and I am purchasing equipment that surpasses my current level of skill but this is equipment I am growing in to.  I am already looking at an introductory sniper rifle class to better my skills.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

"Introductory sniper rifle class"?
"The mission of the rifle will be both competition and operational."?

You spent how much on this rifle?  And you are new to precision weapons?

For what "operation" are you setting this rifle up?

I'd like to see pictures of your rifle, haven't actually handled an OSR yet.

Nightforce makes a fine scope, and both models referenced good, but without more info on your "operation" and competition, I can't tell you which one would be better suited.

As far as the competition question, I am only talking of local gun competitions that wont surpass 300 yards.  Steel plate timed, 3 gun and so on.  Im not looking at Camp perry or anything like that.  This is for fun.

As far as operational, my intent is to join my forces SWAT team and I am going to persue the role of sniper.  I am looking into a couple of different training academy's (like Thunder Ranch) in order get a jump on knowledge and put myself in a better position to be considered for my goal.

The OSR is simply an AR style rifle but shoots the 308 round.  It has a maximum effective range of 800 yards but as stated earlier, my distances will be half of that or less.  Realistically I dont see shooting outside of 300 yards but I would like to ensure that I can have the ability to successfully shoot out to 500 yards.

The following are links to each scopes and the rifle for your info

I guess Im acknowledging that I have little experience with precision scopes.  Im trying to make a good purchase without making a $2000 mistake.  I feel that I dont fully understand each scopes capability and am looking for some guidance.

Thanks again for any help you can provide.

My guess on why the two scopes cost almost the same is the addition of the zero-stop on the 2.5-10x32. As an owner of that scope in the non-zero-stop variation, I would say do not get it unless you get zero stop. Unlike the larger NF scopes, you will have no indication of how many times you've turned the turret. Otherwise, it is an excellent scope and I was looking through mine an hour before sunrise the other morning while out hunting and even at 10X could make out various objects (cows, horses, bushes, rocks) half a mile away. What I love is the compactness and tracking. And because 10X is the high end, even though this scope is SFP, ranging with the reticle is fine because it's out at ranges beyond 200 yards where you might use that capability. With other NF SFP scopes you will have to range at 15 or 22 (whatever the highest mag is) or mentally compensate at lower magnifications. For shooting a .308 out to 500 yards this is just about a perfect scope.

That said, I recently invested in a Premier 3-15X50 because for shots out in the 400-800 yard range I wanted the additional 50% magnification and the 50mm objective obviously offers better low-light performance. I also like that 1 turn of the turret will take my .308 load out to 1200 yards - its max before going sub-sonic. That last "feature" is just gravy and not practical for my use. Even so, you'll have to push the envelope pretty far to exceed the capabilities of the NF 2.5-10X32.

I'd gladly give up the difference between 2.5 and 3.5 or even 4x for more power on the top end.  Not that you will use that maximum power all the time but when you are on the range it is very nice to be able to see the holes in the target without having to walk down to the target after every couple of shots.  I have a similar rifle and the scope I have on mine is the 3-9x42 FFP Super Sniper and I am quite satisfied with it for the price.  I find that it is a good scope to work with until I can afford one of the two above.  Nightforce builds a good scope Premier and Heinsoldt (tactical zeiss) build incredible scopes.
