I mounted a couple of my new scopes today and I re-learned a couple of things.  First of all, eye relief is much more important than I remembered!!!!  Something I forgot was that eye relief isn't just important on hard kickers, it's also an important factor in where you put your face/cheek when you mount a gun!  On one of the guns I was able to move the scope back far enough that I get a full view thru the scope..... no clouding out at the edges.  On the other, not so lucky.  I have to crawl up the stock to get that same full view.  One of the scopes I mounted was a 4200 Elite 3-9X40 and the other was a Vortex Diamondhead 4-12X40.  The Vortex is more eye-relief challanged and hence is the one I have to crawl on.

There has been a lot of talk on this forum lately about ER not being that big of an issue, well I think we were forgetting about the fit angle and was a little too worried about getting dinged or not.  So if you are looking for a new scope, keep this in mind!

Another thing is I don't think all manufactors measure ER the same.  According to the specs there should be only about a half inch or so difference between the 2 scopes mentioned above, but in reality, it was much more than that.  Enough that it made a difference.  Again, there is no substitute for going to a store and physically trying out what ever you are interested in buying!

I'm thinking the Zeiss Conquest with its 4" of ER may have been the better buy in the long run.  Sometimes you just can't tell until you get the darn thing mounted on your set-up, but I wish I would have been more alert to this before hand.

I thought you were ordering a Vortex Diamondback.
