Hey everybody I am hosting a little shooting event at my farm with friends and family at the end of this month. I hosted somthing similar last year.  Last year we had a little competition with clay birds. We all put in $5 bucks then we would have two shooters up at a time and if the first shooter misses his clay target then the 2nd shooter can shoot it and knock him out of the competition. You just keep this going till you have the final two shooters then they can either split the pot or have a shoot out. We had a heck of a good timeBig Smile Also if one shooters hits his target but not very good the 2nd shooter can shoot a peice of his clay and still knock him out.
We had such a fun time with shotguns last year that this year I wanted to do a rifle shooting competition as well. We can shoot up to 250 yards in our feild. I know their are a lot of gun range rats on this forum so give me some ideas for a little friendly competition!!!!

What kind of targets do you have access to? What kind of rifles (ARs, bolt actions, centerfire, rimfire) will you be using? What kind of support will you have (who is going to score and set targets)?

I am leaning toward centerfires.
Open class AR's and bolts.
I will be the ome setting up targets but the guys I run with are very helpful and handy
I have one 10 inch steel plate target now and thought about getting more in smaller variations.
I just want to think this though so it runs smoothly and we arent trying to make up the rules as we go...

take a one foot rod of re bar and drive it 6 inches in the ground. Take a 1 foot piece of pipe and stick over the re bar. sit an egg on the pipe. shot the eggs like you did the clay birds. start at 100 yards and go out to 250 in 50yd increments. do $5 or 10 Per distance. eggs don't cost much or need clean up.

set them up at unknown distances, then you must range AND shoot.

Set steal plates out at different distances. Each shooter gets one shot per plate and a limited amount of time to engage the plates. The one with the most hits wins. You can vary this depending on how many plates you have.

I always thought it would be fun to come up with some sort of contraption that would send clays rolling along a slope. I get plenty of practice shooting stationary targets.

Another thing you can try that sort of gets you half way there and simulates the adrenaline/exertion sometimes encountered in hunting is to require timed shooting and running. Even on the same target, running 50 yards diagonally from the last spot requires you to find a shooting position and reacquire the target.

After talking with friends I plan to get a bunch of ping pong balls and glue them to golf tees. I want to then stick them a foam block and shoot them at various distances out to 250. I think ping pong balls will work better then eggs because if you hit the tee and not the ball we will be able to visually inspect the ball. PLUS if I hit a bump on the way down they wont bust Big Smile I think the first round of the shoot will be at 100 yards and each shooter will have 5 pin pong balls. In order to advance to the next round you must hit 3 of the 5 balls..... Then move in 50 yard increments out to 250! What you guys think?? Does it sound entertaining to you????

I have actually seen such a contraption at a sporting clays range. They called it the rabbit station and it was a booger to hit them too!!!!

Take an old truck tire and paint four eight inch longxwide marks on it, roll it at the shooter (you need a ramp and release) from thirty yards and see how many times they can get a shot into the "kill zone".
They have to stay in position as it rolls down on them and have to shot it to prevent getting run over..simulates stress..breaking a charge..lots of wet pants and hurt ego's.
I couldn't do it and would probably wet my pants if not worse..it stops being fun..many lessons learned.

Hot cans of beer or pop will make a show when rifles hit them. Milk jugs full of water. Go watch some you tube videos and find what works for you.

Tks for all the ideas everybody. I would say our little shooting comp was a hell of a good time. We had about 35 people show up. We shot elimination rounds with clays. For pistols we shot 5 12" inch steel plates. You had to hit all 5 to advance to the next round. We moved further and further away from the steal plates until we established a winner. Revolvers with 6 inch barrel were the consistent winner! For the sniper shoot we shot ping pong balls glued to golf tees! That is the perfect target because you can tell even if the ball is nicked by the bullet. My intention was to start at 100 yards then you had to hit 5 balls with 5 shots to advance to the next round which would be at 150 yards. Me and one other shooter were the only ones to hit all five balls! We just split the pot! I have a good ol 16x Super sniper on my savage 308 and out shot a guy with a Rem 5r mil specs with night force scope. I was extremely happy with that Big Grin
We are going to make this an annual!!!!!!!!!!!!!
