Folks:

New to the forum and hoping someone can help.

Several months ago I bought a Burris FF 3-9x40 #4 E-Dot (illuminated), with 30mm tube. I am planning to put it on a Zastava M70 chambered in 7x57. The rifle will come with iron sights from the factory, so I want to mount the scope in QD rings to take advantage of the iron "just in case." I'm planning to use Warne QD rings.

But here is the question: Have any of you mounted that scope or something similar (i.e. 30mm) on a Zastava, Rem 798, or Interarms Mark X in low rings? The tech from Warne said there was no problem with objective clearance, but he's not sure the bolt handle will clear the ocular. I know someone who has mounted a one-inch tube on a Zastava using Warne low rings, but not a 30mm. Obviously, I can opt for mediums from the get-go, but I'd really like to mount the scope low if possible. By the way, the rifle stock is Monte Carlo and not hogback.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Mike,
Without your rifle here, I cannot guarantee a specific height. I can give you some measurements that may help you in choosing the needed height for that scope.

The magnification ring is the largest part of the ocular assembly. It measures 43.56mm (1.715") in diameter. This leaves you with 6.78mm (0.267") of difference between the tube and ocular assembly. The Warne rings measure 5.58mm (0.219") from top of base to bottom of scope tube. (20.58mm from top of base to centerline of scope tube.)

The eye relief is going to be 3.8"-3.1".

Hope this helps.

Thanks. If I understand this right, the magnification ring will extend .048 inches beyond the ring saddle. So it's going to depend on the bolt lift, right?

The magnification ring will be .048" lower than the top of the scope base the ring is sitting on. It is going to depend on the bolt throw angle. Most of the time, if a bolt handle catches the mag ring, its around the 4 to 5 o clock position.

Thanks. I guess the best thing to do will be order the low rings and give them a try. If they don't work, I'll move up to the medium rings.

Thanks again.

You chances of them working are pretty good.  With Warne rings, the center line of the 30mm scope is higher than that of the 1" scope.

Thanks. I'm hoping that's the case. It's all going to depend on the lift of the bolt. The rifle should arrive sometime next week and I've already put together two paper blocks the height of each low ring (front and back) from the top of the receive to the bottom of the ring saddle. So we'll see.
