The title pretty much says it all.  I've had a Sightron SII Big Sky 3-9x42 mounted on my .270 for several years now and have the itch for something different/better.  I really have no complaints about the Sightron but I wonder if there's anything nicer for $500 or less.  I've been eyeing a Leupold 3.5-10x40 VX-3i since it's within my budget, but is this even an upgrade over my current Sightron?

I think I've really just got the urge to have a well known brand atop my rifle, but I'd be OK if you could talk me out of changing scopes, haha!  I appreciate the input.

I have both, the VX 3i is a pretty good scope, a decent step up from your SII, should find one for less than $500.

Get a meopta meopro. Probably the best glass under $500 available.

In my opinion, SII Big Sky glass is better at low light color rendition and thus, better at low light resolution than the former acclaimed Zeiss Conquest series, which was made by Meopta and afaik, had the same glass as the Meopro. Big Sky glass is faultless for the price. This is in no way a cut against the Meopro or Conquest, both fine scopes in their own right.

I've not compared a Big Sky with that Leupold, but the Leupold will likely have a better eyebox, as Sightrons aren't known for having a forgiving eyebox, especially at higher powers.

Thanks for the help guys!  I think I'll just stick with the SII Big Sky then.  It's a good scope, and the additional money would probably be better spent on other things!
