Went to get my yearly eye checkup and my prescription has changed a bit which got me to thinking.I have a two day pig hunt coming up in Oct. so went to the safe and pulled out the go to pig rifle 30'06 A Bolt with an old (at least 20 years) Leaupold 4x.Well you can guess where I'am going with this,I need to update the scope for my eyes don't work as well as they used too!The Leaup has been a good workhorse but reality has caught up with me.Time to upgrade.I'am thinking 3x9,I like a simple reticle for pig hunting i.e. heavy plex or plex no mil dots or bdc type reticle just my prefence. Also 40-42 objective to keepscope low.Would like to high dollar but can't at this time so budget is set at 325-350 max, less is ok too just want to get the right scope for the application and budget, most shots will 250yds or less, sometimes much less.So the two scopes I have come up with so far :Bushnell Elite 4200 and the Leaupold Varix11.You guys set me right on the SS 16 for myLRPV 22/250,so have it with your ideas, thanks in advance for the help.

Add Vortex Viper 3-9x40 and Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 to your list.

Generally speaking, Elite 4200 and Viper are direct competitors.  Leupold VX-II is only comparable to them in terms of price tag, not performance.

Unfortunately, the list of scopes that offers think #4 type reticles in this price range is kinda slim.  One option you should consider is Hawke Endurance 30 3-9x42. It is a pretty nice scope that was always retailing for about $300 or so.  It seems to be a fair bit cheaper right now, not sure why.

I've got the Weaver GS 3-10x40.  I shot a doe this year right around 100yds at VERY last light.  I could only make out movement with my naked eye but when I looked through the scope, there she was.  VERY nice scope.

Add the Nikon Monarch 2.5x10x42 to your list.  If you shop around you can get it for under $350.

Hawke is a British company with Hawke USA being a US distributor.  The products they market are mostly made in China, with the Frontier and Frontier SF scopes made in Japan.

The Bushnell 4200 3x9 has Rainguard, a hydrophobic lens coating that's super in wet weather, a reputation for being durable, and nice resolution.  The Vortex Viper seems to have a bit more eye relief to me and has good sharpness too.  Both should work well for your purposes, so it's really just personal preference.  I can't speak to the Weavers, but Koshkin knows his stuff.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but can't you use the ocular adjustment to clear up a bit of the focus problem associated with ageing eyes?  If so, he may already have used it to it's limit but I'm just saying if not, you could use it this year and save for a much better scope to purchase next year.  I will add that my money and I are tighter than bark on a tree though.

Bravo, funny you should mention about the focus just pulled out 4x and foused it the best I could did not seem to help much. The thing I'am noticing  the most is the clarity even in bright light just is not there, this scope is old,on the objective it says M7 4X.It was fine 15 years ago, hell back then I could hit a pig at 125 ydswith open sights on a 30/30 model 94!But now-not!The Sportview on my 10/22 is way clearer and that scope was freewith the purchase of the rifle.Keep the opinions coming, thanks.

I thought that you may have already checked this but thought I'd toss it out anyway.  I have an M8 4X and still like it  but would like to get a ziess, kahles or IOR in a variable and put it on my 700  .30-06.

SWFA is selling that Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9X40 for $254.95...most are selling it for $299. Seems like a great deal!

I ordered the Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 today along with some Talley Lightweights, can't wait to try it all out on my M70 Featherweight Deluxe 30.06!
