depends on the type of terrain, if scoping out the flight paths on lake/river the top, if visible range is around 500 yds with lots of pass shooting the bottom, try to get some that don't feel like duck calls.

I have always used my 7x42 and that is pretty close to the 8x42. The FOV is big enough that you can pick up the flocks if they are booking at a good clip.

A good pick for best all around is 8x42. I'm sure you'll use them for other things also.
