I have 3 rifles. a .243, a .270, and a .338.  Instead of having to buy 3 lower quality scopes for these, I would like to buy 1 good scope to be used on all 3.  Is there any disadvantage to using the detachable rings?  Is that a good way to go about this, or is it a pain in the butt? What bases and rings should I use if I go this route.  Would I just need bases for the 3 guns and get one set of rings?  Would I need different rings for the short action 243, or is that something I would just have to try out first?  Thanks   coby

I would suggest mounting a full-length Picatinny rail on each rifle, preferably all from the same  manufacturer. Badger, Ken Farrell, Warne, TPS and there are others. Get a good scope and suitable Picatinny or Weaver Style Rings and you're good to go as long as you don't mind re-zeroing every time you swap it around! If you keep track of your respective scope settings, you probably will get them to return quite consistently if you take some care to tighten the rings to the bases to the same torque every time.
I think your idea has more merit than putting cheap scopes on everything to stay within a budget.
 Anybody care to add anything?

Excellent commentary, RONK.

You could probably buy Warne rings and rails to save some money.

Normally the idea is to swap scopes, not rifles. So you are setting yourself up for a bit of a pain in that you would have to re-zero every time you swap rifles. It will depend on the make of rifles. If they are all the same make and model, you can get away with one set of rings with bases on each rifle. Otherwise the advise given by Ronk is on the money.

I'm not sure if you're arguing or agreeing with me, 8-shots!
If you put a Picatinny (mil-spec 1913 or whatever they call it), rail on each rifle, they can each be a different make, model, caliber, even action type and it won't matter.  The scope with the rings attached to it will fit each rifle perfectly by merely setting the rings into a set of cross-slots on the base and tightening the clamp screws. You will have to re-zero, of course, but after you've done it a few times you should be able to keep track of the windage and elevation settings for the correct zero of each rifle and get very close before firing a shot. I do recommend that all your bases are from the same manufacturer for the best odds of getting perfect rail uniformity, but if they are made to spec, it really shouldn't matter if they are from different companies, either.
Do not use two-piece bases for this application! Your ring spacing will almost certainly be wrong for at least one of the three rifles! Use a one-piece rails on all of them!

Thanks for the info guys.  I will be getting the one piece rails for each rifle.  The rifles are all weatherby vanguard stainless.  I am happy with all of the rifles, and getting pretty good groups with them.  The only thing I don't like is the triggers.  They are awful.  I haven't tested, but I think the trigger weight is about 13 pounds.  Just kidding.  Do you guys happen to know if they are adjustable, and if they are do I need to get a gun smith to adjust them.

ummmm.......I have two cents worth to add.......Stare  By the time you set up all three rifles with identical mounts ( rails ) and one set of rings....you could BUY yourself at least ONE MORE scope!  Then all you would need is one more scope to finish the trio, and you won't have to fool around with all of that sighting-in nonsense constantly.  ( I'm just thinking out loud..........just pretend I'm not here....Thinking    )                   --Ed ( whose not really here )

You probably right Ed.  I just looked at cheaptricks link, and those rails are about 80 dollars each.  Oh well, I was a thought.  The sighting in part sounded fun to me though.  Would have given me a reason to go to the range, other than trying to get better groups that will probably never happen.

ya but, buy the rails now and be able to change the scope then over the next few years as you can save up the money buy nice scopes for all three of them.  It is win win that way.

How do you figure?
 Option A:
     Three rifles @ 1000 dollars each =            3000.00
     One scope @ 1000 dollars          =            1000.00
   One set of rings @  150 dollars   =              150.00
    Three bases @ 100 dollars ea.   =              300.00
 Total                                               =           4,450.00
 Option B
    Three rifles @ 1000 dollars each =            3000.00
    Three scopes @ 1000 each        =             3000.00
    Three sets of rings @ 150           =              450.00
     Three bases @ 100                    =              300.00
 Total                                               =             6,750.00

 Difference Between Option "A" and Option "B"      =     $ 2,300.00

Of course you can plug in any doller value you want to for the various components, but as long as you are comparing apples to apples, it comes out proportional.  In my scenario, he can do a lot of sighting in for $2,300.00!
True, he could go with Barskas on Weaver rings and bases, but that's not what he wants!

Edited to add: Just for kicks, plug in 3-Schmidt and Bender PMIIIs @ $2850.00 ea. into my equation!

I was planning on a 400.00 dollar scope.  The zeiss 3x9x40.  I would still come out money ahead with the one scope and 3 bases.  What is the advantage to the picanny style bases.  I think the picanny style are the rail type?  With the rings already attached to the scope I guess it would make more sense to go with the rail bases, right?  The 338 and the 270 have the same action length, but the 243 is short actioned.  I wouldn't have to adjust the rings on the scope when switching from the long to short action, would I?

also, when I finally get scopes for the other two rifles, I can just continue to use the rail bases.  Does the rail base make it easier to adjust the forward/backward movement of the scope?  Is that why people use them?  I always thought that the regular two piece bases looked better, but I really don't care about that.

The Picatinny system is probably the closest thing there is to a standard, or universal system and it is more popular than ever. Yes, it is sometimes called a "rail", (but so are other, obsolete systems.)
If you're familiar with the AR15 Flattop, that is basically a Picatinny "base" machined right into the receiver of the rifle.
The advantages are that as a system, it's very strong, easily detachable, quickly remountable with little or no loss of zero, easily moved forward and backward for eye-relief fine tuning and set to dimensional standards that manufacturers are expected to machine their parts to, allowing interchangibility between vendors. (Weaver Top-Mount Rings will fit a Picatinny base, but the reverse is not true, as I understand it.)
The reason it is ideal for you, is because it won't matter how long or short your actions are, all will work with one set of rings, at least base-wise. I imagine you could still have height or bolt-clearance issues, but since they are all Vanguards, I rather doubt it.  Please keep us posted!  I really want to hear that this idea worked well for you!  I think it's a great idea to get the best bang for your buck aside from selling off two of the rifles!
Even if you decide that swapping a scope from one rifle to another is not worth the hassle, you can always get two more scopes and two more sets of rings and you really haven't lost anything. The bases are already mounted on the rifles and ready to go!

Yes , the only downside I can see would be appearance, if they don't appeal to your tastes. They will probably be a few ounces heavier too, but that's not always bad.

I personally like the rugged, tacticool appearance!  Cool

I was thinking that ckk1106 ( hereafter referred to as APPLEHEAD....) was talking about an ordinary scope that didn't need to be financed by GMAC, RONK.  [ Incidentally, RONK, why don't you behave yourself and go read a Wilbur Smith book?......]         Thunbs%20Up    --Ed

I don't really like one piece bases on my hunting rifles. They do get in the way of the receiver opening and I'm not all thumbs. Well, maybe.
But, what the guys are saying is true and the rail is no doubt your best option. It is also very sturdy. Plus, like RONK says, it's "tacticool".
The Warne suggestion from Cheaptrick is a good one because you can get the lever mount that speeds up the scope swap.

I was wondering if I should change my avatar.  When I signed up that was the first one that I saw, of the options that were given.  Maybe if I get a new avatar I can get a different title besides applehead.
