I got this as a present from my dad as my first hunting rifle when I was 12.  I killed first deer and many after with it.  I kinda forgot about it once I got a job and bought a Rem700.

I got the Leupold cause the knobs are small and its a classic hunting scope.  The previous scope is a made in japan universal.  actually has decent glass, those mounts had to go though.

Also I want to add that Ken Farrell claims to make a scope base for this but I bought one and he doesn't even know what size screws to use in them. These are #8 screws his base had #6. 87 bucks for his base,  had to go buy a redfield...........works perfectly.

Oops sorry should mention that since I wanted to get out the info on the Ken Farrell base not being correct.  It is a Remington 788.

its a non-carbine .243, the 18 inchers were the last of them made in the 80's

I never knew people liked them very much.  Its so hard to get any parts, and only 2 bases I know of made for them.

thats why you buy all the parts you can!! your rifle is worth probably twice as much in pieces as it is whole, the 788 has a cult like following

get this when I was 14 I broke a mag spring then chunked the old mag.  I was mad when the new factory mag cost me 15 bucks.

I never knew they would cost this much now.

Are 788's that old?  I don't understand why they are so $$, there is one in my family, i believe it's a 22-250, very accurate rifle.  I have always thought about redoing the stock, has lots of hunting dings and scratches.

cause they will out shoot any m700 out of the box in any caliber chambered for the 788 thats why, they cost less than $100 to buy brand new and now they are worth 6-8 times that, even more under the right circumstances.

Says who?

I've shot dumptruck loads of both rifles, and I haven't found that to be the case overall.

Every rifle is unique.  You can never assume that "all" of any rifle will always outshoot "any" other, because these are factory rifles.  Factory rifle accuracy is always somewhat of a crapshoot.

wish I could tell ya how it shoots but I have not shot it in over 6 years and that was with the old 4x scope.  I never missed a deer growing up though.

I wish the ejection angle was a little lower though.  I tried low rings and it hit my scope knobs.

Thinking about rotating the scope
