.........................You can be assured though, that whatever formula Bushnell uses for its Rainguard is "top secret" and/or a patented process...........Other scope makers have, currently do or will use their own formulas to try and achieve the same results!..........If a scope lacks or is deficient in good lens coatings for bad weather use, there are always flip up scope covers!

Bushnell filed a patent on their rainguard coatings in 2003 (patent #6,542,302).  It is reasonably well written, but since everybody and their grandmother have been making hydrophobic coatings for a number of years now, there is nothing preventing other companies from using them.  A lot of Bushnell's patent talks about the particular combination of their AR coating and Rainguard (not all hydrophobic coatings work equally well with all AR coatings).  It looks like they tried to write a fairly broad patent, but I am not sure whether it is very defensible since I think there was prior art.  Either way a simple patent search on hydrophobic glass coatings yield a couple of thousands of hits.

It is interesting that apparently during the time when this patent was filed Bushnell's AR coating was only four layers.  Most sophisitcated coatings had gone on to higher layer counts by then.  I wonder if Bushnell had improved their AR coatings since then.

.............................................He probably will. But in reality, the percentage of glass quality gain is very small as compared to a much higher percentage in price one must pay to have that small gain in optics............

Forgot to add:  Bushnell's formula for their coatings is nicely described in their patent, so working around it is pretty straightforward.

Hell, I couldn't even find it.
Anyways, the stuff works and it didn't stay fogged for long when I breathed on it outside, either.
