Are you interested in getting a "pretty" rifle or a hardworking, all-weather tool?

Action type?

What will be the intended use?

the new ruger compact magnums have me somewhat intrigued, not as much recoil as the wsms and about on par with the rsum if they came in something other than a ruger, i wouldnt mind trying one out. the .260 is something i crave somewhat as is a 7-08 and also a .257roberts and a .257wby 7mag and a .338mag would be okay too. 450 marlin and 444marlin wouldnt be ruled out either. i have a 22-250 so anything in a that category wouldnt be necessary, the new mini 14 in a 6.8spc intrigues me some too.

or we could go with plan b buy a semi auto pistol, or plan c. buy a new higher end scope for one of my other deer rifles.

Pyro, how about a .338 Fed., puts you into the medium bore range, without severe recoil.  I personally own a .444 marlin and love it, but it sure packs a wollop, simular to a .375 h&h or 12ga. slug

What about a Browning Lever in .358. Win or 325 WSM.  I would love one!

i dont have any trouble with the 12 ga slug, ive never shot a .375h&h but i know the light weight 300wsm i had was a kicker, the .338 fed imo is taking the .308 case beyond its effective range in terms of total performance, the .308 itself it probably as far up the scale as they should have gone, not enough case capacity to justify it. i dont know how much i would really use a lever gun so the 444 and 450 marlins would be last resorts i guess.

Ya, the 338 fed isn't the best ballistically, just a suggestion.  What about upgrading one of the calibers you already own to a nicer rifle.  Thats what i'm currently doing, taking the calibers i'm in love with upgrading to a finer gun, that usually cures the itch.

Just remember that recoil is as much mental as it is physical in most respects.  If you can handle a 12ga slug, you won't have a problem with a a 338 mag. I agree with you in that the wsm line is "sharp" in recoil, where as the 338 is more of a "push".  I just think you owe it to yourself to try something bigger, it looks like you have the .264 line well covered, nothing really to gain unless you go to the over .30 crowd

Anchutz in .22 hornet?Elite

Ruger #1 in .257 something

Personally, unless you are hunting elk, moose or large bear I'd get something FUN like one of the CZ 527 in .223 or .204 and let the local varmits live in FEAR.

Pyro, for North American game I would recommend the 270 Win. Bucky

If that doesn't interest you I think the CZ in 6.5X55 would be great....I have wanted one for years--but all my money seems to find its way to my kids, somehow.....   HA!              --Ed
