I recently purchased a BLR in 358 that is going to be my primary deer hunting gun. I am now looking for a scope to put on it.

I've always used Leupold scopes in the past (Vari-X II's and III's).  I've read many of the reviews here and elsewhere and I'm now looking for other options.

I hunt in pretty thick cover in PA.   I was looking for something in the 2-7 range.

I was looking at the Leupold VX-II or the Conquest.  Anything else I should look at in the $500 range?  Is the #4 reticle really worth the $130 upcharge on the Conquest?

Thanks.

Conquest would be just fine in that price range...actually, it would be really good and much better than the VX-II.  The #4 recticle is nice for lowlight shooting, but I don't find it either positive or negative with respect to thick cover.  2-7x36 would be perfect for you.

Thanks for the input.  I can't seem to find a 2-7x36.  Did you mean the 2.5-6x32?

The conquest 2.5x8x32 is a nice little scope for dense cover with the z plex reticle which comes standard in them. Light and easy to mount, low but with some very nice optics for its price range. Shop around as there are some pretty unbelievable deals available on this model right now. The 4" of eye relief and 13.7oz weight are nice features also. You could also use the 3x9x40 model for your application, they are also pretty reasonable.

Oops.  I meant to ask if you meant the 2.5-8x32?

just curious....... how think of cover/how long will your shots be?

btw........ nice gun!  I've wanted one of those for a while now but really don't have a need for one since I don't hunt in the heavy stuff.

I suspect shots will be 35-100 yards.  There are some places where there could be shots of 175 yds, but that would be very rare.

Another question.  I see people talking about the size of the ocular on the Zeiss, how much bigger is it than the Leupold?  Will this cause a problem in trying to work the hammer on the gun?

358 -

It won't be a problem if you get the proper ring height.  Just mount it a little higher and the ocular lens won't be a problem.

Also, I wasn't referring to any particular scope, just more generally something around 2-7x36 would work.

1 3/16" OD for a conquest ocular diameter pretty much to give you an idea what you're working with for comparison.

Didn't I see some Nikon Monarch 2X7's in the SWFA line-up?  Did they quit making them?  Anyway, they are a good scope...I had one of them several years ago.     --Ed

358......................I will probably go against the normal grain here and suggest something different.  As you say, your hunting for the most part will be in thick cover and shots not exceeding 175 yards. Certainly, a 2x7 will work just fine! So will a 3x9!................Your 358 BLR can be a very quick handling rifle and it is also designed for moderate ranges.  A scoped rifle is as only as quick as the scope you put on it!..........My suggestion to you, is to consider a lower powered variable scope, where you can obtain or acquire the target much faster with both eyes open, have a great FOV, is very light weight, with fully coated optics and low light capabilities comparable to many higher priced scopes!...........This scope is on my short list to mount on my M1500 Howa .375 Ruger after it arrives. I have looked through its 2x7 bigger brother and I would have to say that I was very impressed to say the least. Because of its low price, this is one of the very few scopes that will fool you if you didn`t know any better!..............The Weaver Classic V3 in 1x3 at about $150..........3x is enough for any deer sized game out to 250-300 yards. 3x power is certainly good enough for precision range shooting at 100 yards. Your groups should be just as good using 7x............I have read a few reviews on another site about the V3. Owners use it on 375`s, big bored guide guns, 350 Rem. Mags, 416 mags, etc. They have also compared the V3 to the VX2`s and VX3`s for clarity and low light capability. One even stated he liked it to his Monarch Gold??!! Another mentioned that his V3 had better light low light capability than his very own 1.5-5x20 VX3!! To be honest, I really can`t see too much, IF ANY DIFFERENCE, between the 2x7 V7 and my own 4200............I did call Weaver directly the other day to find out if Meade, who now owns Weaver, had changed any componentry after the takeover. As always, these scopes are made in Japan with no change in quality or suppliers. The glass in the V3`s according to the tech I talked to, is the same as the Grand Slams. Having seen both scopes, I can concur and agree!.....................IMO, the V3 is a better match to your particular rifle and better suited for the terrain you will be hunting in. It has great optics, is lighter, quicker to the target with both eyes open aiming, has a much better FOV than any 2x7, will perform in any weather and is less money!....................Oh sure! The Zeiss, Kahles, Meoptas, etc. will offer the better glass! No doubt there! You will pay for that though, several times over. However, the difference in their quality vs the V3, does not go up in proportion to their increased price!...............Just a few thoughts from the Squeezer!!!

I'd stay away from anything that requires high rings.  The BLR has a low comb anyway if I remember correctly.  A high scope will have you lifting your head up to see through it.  I've used an old Vari X II 2-7 on my BLR for many years.  It works fine and is always ready.  I haven't had to adjust it in 10 or more years.

I'd put a luepold vxii 1-4x20 on a lever action.  This will provide enough power for 200 yd. shots and allow you to turn it down for upclose and personal shots.  I prefer a scope of this size on a lever gun, a 3-9 power just looks out of place.

i agree with that, as much as i hate the thought of a lver gun with a scope on it, if one must have a scope due to poor eyesight etc. then smaller is better as lucy said it looks wonky otherwise.

Does the $399 Conquest have a fixed parallax for 50 yds?  If so, should I be concerned?

Regarding the physical size of the scope, that's one of the primary reasons that I was looking for a small power scope.  I won't need the extra magnification and I don't want to have a physically large scope that messes up the balance of the gun and looks bad.
