First time poster, great forum a lot of good information here.
I am comparing a few different brands of scopes to put on my new Kimber 300 win mag, but I am really leaning towards the Zeiss Conquest line. I am most interested in the 3.5X10X44 model, but wanted a little advice. I purchased the gun for a trip to Africa I have planed for May. Mostly planes game Kudo, Gemsbok, etc... But I also do a lot of deer hunting, and sometimes Elk here in the states. My question is really to get an opinion on a 3X9 vs 3.5X10, is it worth giving up the .5 on the low end to get the extra 1.0 mag on the high end? I also like the 44 that comes with the 3.5X10 vs the 40 with the 3x9, it seems it would be a little better in lower light situations? Anyone have any suggestions to what you feel is the best reticles for this style of hunting? Also, any comments about the Zeiss Conquest line would be much appreciated!! Thanks in advance for the response.

The extra .5 would likely be barely noticeable, I think the 3.5-10 would be a good mag range. It's a smart choice, You might also want to look at Kahles as well. Check out the Sample list for some great deals. Best of luck to you. Do you plan on hunting in low light? If so look at the heavier reticles and also the Trijicon line of scopes.
Welcome to the OT.

im going to go away from my normal here picture this i know you all have seen it but
kimber rifles look damn hot with a big fat gold ring scope on them, so i would say get a vx-III in a 3.5x10
but the zeiss is a better scope fro sure, and i dont see where getting a 3.5x10 is going to help you, really how often do you think you will use the highest power while hunting at home or abroad??

OK, now time for the first timer question...
I have seen some posts about the 'Sample list', but I do not know what or where that is.
Thanks for your advice!

It is a web site offered by our hosts here at Optics Talk.
They offer factory refurbished, demos and used scopes for sale at attractive prices.
BTW, the 3.5-10x40 VariX-III is a solid choice for an all around scope as is the 3-9 or 3.5-10 Conquest. The Zeiss has better glass.
Maybe our friend from South Africa, 8shots, will be around later. He hunts a lot of plains game and likes his Leupy's. Edited by tahqua - January/29/2008 at 13:46 |

Yeah kinda the way my 7400 30-06 wouldn't look right with out the Leupold either. It just seems that they were meant to be.

Yes, it is for sale, thought the "shipped and insured" would be pretty clear. Getting rid of several scopes I do not use.

I know, but it will probably take me 6 months to get up to 50 posts! Try not to open my mouth too much, that way I can't be called stupid.
