A friend of my father is looking for a a good 4-12 or 4-16 scope.  He is familiar with Leupold so that was his first choice.  My thoughts are there are just as good of scopes out there for about the same or even less money.  The scope needs to be clear, and weather proof since it will be for hunting on the West coast which provides for some pretty good distance shots in some pretty bad weather.

So, I figured I'd put it out to the optics experts here on the forums.  If you were looking for a 4-12 or 4-16 powered scope for a rifle and did not want to spend more than $500, what scope would it be.

Also, I'd like to use Leupold as a base so if you say that you'd pick Brand X over Leupold can you provide some feedback as to why?

Thanks for your help

A 4200 will be your best bet with the price and power considerations. You tend to pay more for Leupold's customer service and name.

The new Talley Lightweight aluminum integral mounts could give Leupold a run for their money. The only down side is that only make them for your more common rifles. Leupold will just about cover most guns, and will be a fine choice.

the elite 4-16 is big, long, and isnt light. i would look at a lower power scope, unless the shots are REALLLLY out there, then look at something with a ballistic reticle, like the black diamond 4-16x40?, or 44? witht he ballistic mildot. but a scope higher than 3-9 isnt nessesary unless your lokking at little targets, or big gamn hunting out past 800 yards. i never turn my scopes up past 5x for big game hunting, even at 600 yards.

Bushnell Elite 4-16x40.....$398.99 has rain guard and comes w/ free $100.00 gear bag coupon

Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42.....$336.99 comes packaged w/ free 12-24x50 Spotting scope

Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14x40.....$324.95

Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x44.....$399.99

I would pick the Elite 4200 over Leupold because it has the rainguard coatings that will not fog externally in nasty weather, it comes with a really nice gear bag, comes with a sun shade, goes 4x its starting power 4-16 instead of Leupold's 4.5-14, has low profile finger adjustable windage and elevation knobs, has one year money back guarantee, and is optically compatible to the VX-III for less money.

What about Burris Signature Select 4-16x44 and Pentax Lightseeker II 4-16x44? Both are cheaper than a comparable Leupold VXIII, and better, IMO, optically. Both are tough scopes the best that I know.

While a bit more expensive than Chris' suggestions, these are still a better deal than Leupold VXIII.

Looks like evreyone here is hitting the mark on the 4200's and the Burris Signature Selects and others.  I have a B&L 4200 in a 4-16x50 (also available in a 4-16x40).  It's a real good scope and a little heavy.  Its only drawback is that you have to use real high mounts to clear the barrel.  If that doesn't bother you go ahead with it but I would also try and look at something in the 40 to 44 mm size objective which will let you mount the scope a little lower.   I agree with every one else with with their saying about the "L" brand!

On another discussion / forum site , the subject of overall optic quality came up. It  used scientific analysis to compare several scopes of different $ and manufahttp. You might be surprised at the way Burris stacked up against Leupys !

For hunting my choice is MEOPTA (czech made) or DOCTER (german made). They are 100% europeans but the price is moderate..SEE THEM.

dwtz28, I just read that link.  Wow, I have Burris on 5 rifles, and a mix of Zeiss, Docter, Bushnell, Schmidt and Bender, Kahles, or Leupold on everything else.

Can't keep Burris down.  One tough bright scope.

Wish they had mount rails for my Blasers.
