If you would have suggested from the start you were going to try and use low rings to mount a 3.5x10x44 scope I could have told you it wouldn't work. It takes medium height rings to mount that scope.

Correct, the eyepiece is a bit fat, but with the blood I have another Kimber in .308, and I have to say they have the best stock dimentions of any rifle I've shot. If you mount the scope low, it allows you to bear down firmly on the comb, which dramaticaly reduces felt recoil. The new gun being a 300WSM, I definetly wanted to take advantage of that feature.

You betchum, White Eyes!! There was a thread on this here forum several months ago about mounting problems on an old Model 70 Winchester. ( You can find it by using the SEARCH thingee and look for the word "eyepiece" in the Topic....) Someone was having problems with bolt handles using a MODEL 70 WINCHESTER. Now, RIGHT THERE, you KNOW that there has got to be a PROBLEM!! When a scope won't BEHAVE itself when getting mounted on a WINCHESTER, something is WRONG!! ( FAT EYEPIECES!!)
The folks who chimed in on the thread were having to go to HIGH rings because of BOLT HANDLES!!
TELEGRAM TO SCOPE MANUFACTURERS!!..... "NOT ALL RIFLES HAVE A 60 degree bolt lift!!" HELLO!! HELLO!! Earth to scope manufacturers...come in, please......!!
Why does everybody have to mess with stuff that ain't broken?........... --Ed

I prefer the newer larger oculars and so do a lot of other shooters. I also prefer the faster euro style focus, if you don't like them, better buy plenty of scopes now because most all manufactures are going that direction. Remember that scope makers create and sell what the majority of buyers want and buy, I personally hate the old slow lock ring focuses and also hate how many times you gotta look away and rest your eye as you struggle to focus them. Also the europeans have been adjusting focus routinely and changing it often compared to the US shooters who believe you set it once and never touch it again. When someone shoots one of my guns they can change the focus for their eyes and shoot it clear to their eye and I can set it back in a 1/2 second or less to where I had it for my eyes. When someone offers me an older slow focus scope to shoot, if it don't work for my eye I just decline the offer.....its way to much BS to play with tuning it to my eye and then making them go thru the hassle of refocusing it to their eyes. Field of view is often better with the larger oculars also...if you hate large oculars you would have to stick with the old style thats on the less optically superior scopes now. It would most truthfully become a matter of form over better function. You're eliminating kahles, swaro, zeiss, meopta, IOR, S&B, US optics, and now a lot of the more US oriented scopes too.....

I have never had a problem with mounting due to an ocular lense. I do not consider mount height a matter of form over function, though. A good cheek "weld" is very important to me for comfort and accurate shooting. Certainly compromises have to be made and everyone is different but high mounts are a negative for me. I only have one 50mm scope and that is enough.

Thats just it tahqua, I've never had to go to high rings to mount a euro style ocular scope. I have also never lost cheekweld with medium burris signitures either. Too many 40-44mm scopes with euro style eye pieces that fit well with medium rings, if a fella just has to have low rings or else, no compromise, I guess the larger oculars would be a drawback and therefore a matter of form over function, plain and simple. I agree with your post, I don't own or use a single set of high rings, never have never will.......course I don't own any scopes over 44mm either. Focus Edited by Focus - January/26/2008 at 10:21 |

I have a 3.5-10 Conquest on my Cooper -06, that are set in Med rings, it works. But in a Mag I want my cheek "melted" to the stock. For me it makes a world of difference in recoil. I have also never had to focus a scope in the field. I don't like scopes that have front or side focusing either, switches, gadgets, etc. Someday I may even graduate to fixed power instead of zooms, so as to eliminate all distractions so that I can "just shoot"!

It all depends on the rifle. My aggravation with the FAT EYEPIECES is the problem you get mounting them on classic rifles like: Winchester Model 70s, Win Model 52s, Mauser 98s and ALL derivatives ---(including every Sako made before the Model 75!), Springfield Model 03s, ...whew....the list is endless!!!....
You would BE LUCKY if you could mount those scopes in Medium rings...SIMPLY to clear the bolt handle!!! Am I supposed to think that this is PROGRESS?? There was a fella right here on this forum who had to go to SUPER HIGH Leupold rings to clear a Winchester Bolt handle with a Conquest!!! ( of course, he had Leupold bases underneath--which are about the thickness of a corn flake! heh heh...) You don't NEED Medium rings to mount a 40 mm objective on ANYTHING!!! IT'S THE BOLT HANDLE!!
That's why I get aggravated at this Nonsense. In Europe all the hunter's mount their scopes up in the sky anyway!! Try mounting one of these Fat Eyepieces on a Winchester Model 52. Your Face would be in another Zip Code from the comb of the stock!
