I have a new Kimber 8400 in .300 WSM. I'll be using it out west where the shoots will be between 100-400+ yds. I have a 2.5-8 VX3, and a 3.5-10 Conquest and can't decide which to use. I like the low profile of the VX3, and the BC reticle, but like the optics of the Conquest. Is the extra 2x of power going to make a difference? Thank you!

With your rangefinder, take both scopes and do a down range comparison out to 500 yards on various objects so that you can see the difference between the 8x and the 10x............For long range plains work, the Zeiss is the better choice, but either would do nicely.

Two more power can and will make a difference at the longer ranges.

Congrats on the fine rifle...... how 'bout you post a pic! Now that I'm a Kahles guy I'm thinking the 4-12X52 CL for $699.99 off the Samplelist would be perfect. Otherwise I'd go with the Conquest.
This kind of reminds me of a poem I have framed and hung on the wall.

sure, I'll post a pic. Kimber makes a really fine product, this is my second. A 52mm would look rediculous on this light, short action gun, that's why I'm liking the smaller 36mm. Question is 8x vs. 10x.

Well.... you may be right as far as a 52mm being too big. I put a 3-12X40 AO on my little Savage 93R17 and I don't think it looks too bad. Actually, I'm starting to like the way it looks!
Since you have both scopes, why don't you take them out and look at something like a target or something the same size of what you will be shooting at 400 yds? Then you can SEE what the difference is.

I would say the Conquest probably has better optics but I don't think it's any big deal about an extra two power on the top end. You can hunt muleys and antelope just fine with 6X. If you think the Leupold looks better and balances better on your rifle--get it! The Leupold scopes ALWAYS look great, and they work, and they're LIGHT. So maybe they're not as bright as some others! Big deal. I have scopes that aren't as bright as a Zeiss Victory but I still use 'em. Especially if they fit the rifle and balance right and LOOK good! --Ed

I think either scope would meet your needs, My concern is with the BDC reticle, I've personally found them very hard to see in low light conditions, May be its just me, but take one outside at dusk and look at an object up against a dark background, just a something to think about.

Yes Ed, my thoughts exactly. I also have some high-dollar scopes. I realize that the Leupold is not top of the top, and the Zeiss is better opticaly, but balance and feel are also important. I own both scopes already, so it's just a question of which would perform better at longer range.

Just remember that Gadgets like the BDC reticles don't make up for quality practice and range time.

I guess if you're willing to give up some magnification, brightness, resolution, and a better low light reticle for a lighter weight scope that can be mounted lower on the rifle with a BC reticle the leupold is an excellent choice.......for me, the conquest.

Focus, why don't you tell me what you really think! You've pretty much summed it up. I have a Conquest on my Cooper -06, perfect for that rifle. Haven't hunted with it yet, first thought was that the duplex is a bit too large, as I'm used to the Leupold. The other 2.5-8 Leupold is also on my .308 Kimber, I've done quite well with it in ideal conditions out to 200 yds, not sure about much past that.

Other than the BC reticle I've done both scopes you mentioned, pretty much know the long and shortcomings of each :>)

Well, here's what happend...I got my bases the other day, with low mounts, set the Zeiss in them, and the bolt handle was hitting the scope. I would have to raise the scope significantly (medium to high rings) for it to clear, and I like to have my scopes mounted as low as possible. I decided to keep the 2.5-8 for the next lightweight rifle I get, so I took a 3.5-10x40 VXIII of another rifle and put it on the Kimber. Fits perfectly, and will work just fine. I was a bit disappointed that this happend, goes to show you, sometimes form wins over function! Thanks for all the advice!!

Just curious, what caused the bolt handle to hit the Zeiss scope?
Thanks, Sam _popupControl(); |

It's TOO BLOODY FAT of an eyepiece!! Thank God Leupold and Weaver still make Regulation-size oculars the way God intended them to be!! ....so they can fit on a bolt action rifle! --Ed
