I have ordered the Rem 700 VSF during Aug 2007. At that time Remington had no stock and ran a production during Oct 2007. One of these was allocated to me via their local importer Formalito Arms, who applied for a South African police import permit. This has only now been granted and I have been informed that the rifle will be in South Africa in about 1 week.
So to get the rifle to South Africa will take approx 6 months.
Unfortunately this is the easy part. In terms of our Firearms Control Act I had to apply for a competency certificate. This I did last year April. During Nov 2007 my file had still not been processed. I managed to get someone at head-office to move my file to the top of the pile (with a bit of gentle persuasion). I checked today, and my application is slowly being processed ie fingerprints checked, no criminal records, medical conditions etc. FCA expects it to be fully processed in about 3 weeks time. Then I have to apply for a firearm lic for the specific firearm, which can take a further 4 weeks. So if all goes well I may have this rifle by mid March 2008, about 9 months after deciding to purchase it.
Nice, very f#$%ing nice.

The big problem came when police issued a firearm lic to a guy who was crazy. His wife informed the police who unlike them ignored her. The husband then shot the wife. Her parents rightfully sued the pants of the police.
Now they do this Competency thing, where you have to write a test on Firearm ownership and the laws relating to it, as well as do a practical test on shooting and maintaining said firearm. Nothing to strenous. They also do a backgound check and medical check. In principal I agree with this, as many people own a gun who do not know the first thing about it. This can then easily end up in the wrong hands.
What p$sses me off is the poor administration that goes with it. When Mandela was still on Robben Island, we could get a lic in 2 weeks!!
If you want to own more then 4 weapons you have to qualify as a dedicated hunter or sports shooter. This means a further course in hunting and hunting type shooting.
I had done all this years before it became compulsory, so I have my dedicated hunters status.

Personally, I believe in going to your local gunshop and saying, I want that rifle, putting your money down and going home with the rifle.  I do not mind if they register the gun, but in reality, the reason they do that, is because of the f**king gun control freaks and that was there first in road into gun control.  If I knew for sure, it would stop there, thats fine, but that is why I am against any regulation.  Let Cathy McCarthy go screw herself with a broom handle Mauser.

Glad I live right where I live at this point. If I want a rifle I can go buy it and get done in about 1/2 hour and go home with the rifle. You guys sound you live in a great hunting area.......but about 8 months 30 days and 23 1/2 hours to much red tape for me.......not to mention the tests and certificates......

First, thats f**king crazy.  If he killed her with a baseball bat, would everybody have to take a competency test to buy one.  Same with knives, ice picks, bricks, big sticks, hammers, sling shots, chain saws, big gold chains or even wine bottles.  Second, we conservatives are not big on suing alot of people.  Everybody makes mistakes and if every time a husband beat up his wife, stabbed her, ran over her with a car, put her in a limb shredder, buried her with a brand of shovel, threw her in a river with a brand of duct tape or cut her with his favorite brand of knife, then all over this country and all over the world, people would be having to take competency tests to buy these things and the police would be getting sued every time they called, even if the husband did not have a gun.  Its a complex problem, but the woman needs to get the f**k out of the house.  Suing the Police does not solve any problem.  Mandela and his hoodlums stole your country that the Dutch and Germans built, you guys need to become men.

Dolphin, thats one thing I really like about you in particular. You say what a lot of people think but don't have the stones to say. I agree with you its just the first step on the road to total gun control like we're reading about in 8 shots posts. At the mercy of a lazy good for nothing elected official due to laws passed by knee jerk reactions that have as much common sense as outlawing rocks because they were early mans weapon of choice......

Dolphin,
You say it straight brother! The truth is that we are a real men who have been betrayed by the politicians and the world. We have had our own Vietnam. I did my tours fighting Swapo, the ANC and the Cubans. I and my fellow brother in arms put our lives on the line fighting for what we believed in. Then the rest of the world ganged up on us with sanctions and sh&T. I daresay America was one of them. America intially supported us in Angola fighting the Cubans. At one stage the Cubans had a build-up of 40 000 troops. At the crucial time that we were about to take Luanda, America who was actively supporting us (and UNITA)with arms and ammo, they pulled out overnight and litterally left us to dry. We had to fight our way back to South Africa. Allthe big American companies withdrew from South Africa.
The same for the rest of the world. The very Dutch that built the country had there :Free Mandela campaigns etc.
Then our own politicians folded and entered into negotiations with the ANC. Not one of them ever thanked us soldiers for bringing them to the negotiation tables and all swore that they never supported the separate development system, but only became politicians so that they could bring change from within. Bunch of traitors.
So yes, the blackman bemoans his status, but the truth is they ended up with a country rich in development, fully operational roads and infrastructure, electricity, banking systems and a thriving economy.  This they are slowly stuffing up. Our roads are crumbling, we have electricity outages at least once a day due to loadshedding and the list goes on.
Most of the black politicians have gone from jailbirds to multi millionaires in less then 5 years. How is this possible?
The current gunlaws is probably the start of a total ban on guns so that they can take our private assets to at some point when there is nothing left of the state assests.
Nice ramble, but there it is.

I have lots of friends in South Africa that went through the Bush War in Rhodesia in the seventies while the USA and England looked the other way so they wouldn't see anything. The world just turned its back on Ian Smith and all the colonials who built that country. You never heard a word of truth over here in America on the Nightly News if they did bother to mention it at all.

Then the Liberals and the Teddy Kennedys of the world started to really concentrate on the RSA. Sanctions, bullsh*t, no media truth whatsoever! I think de Klerk did an amazing thing in an effort to turn the sh*t around but he wasn't dealing with honorable people on the other "team".  If Nelson Mandela had been doing his "thing" in America in 1963, he would have wound up being reviled and convicted like Timothy McVeigh. There's ANOTHER man who disagreed with the legitimate, legal government of his country, and who decided to BLOW UP a structure and kill a lot of people! McVeigh gets sentenced to death by a vengeful USA public----BUT Nelson Mandela is a POLITICAL PRISONER? Give Me A Break!

Well, thanks to the historic attitude of FW de Klerk, Mandela gets his butt off Robben Island and becomes a Media Darling of the International World. [ Immediately after being a Guest on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Mandela flies off to flap his gums with Fidel Castro! What a nose thumb at America!] Mandela was VERY scrupulous about Modifying his Communist Agenda during his tenure as President. VERY WISE. After all, he knew he was elderly. He would eventually be replaced by the Hardcore ANC-types. Mandela only had to bask in the limelight---a Stalking Horse for what was to come---A Robert Mugabe-type regime in South Africa! It's ALREADY THERE!!

So, unless you've been in a situation where YOUR government BETRAYS you and you find yourself Outnumbered 20 to 1, don't start downgrading the Men who live in Southern Africa! I KNOW, I used to LIVE THERE.

8shots, I am sorry that I made it seem like I was a little down on you.  But in this country, there are alot of ignorant people who know nothing about South Africa and who really built the country from the ground up.  The word Mandela make me, my father and the rest of my family shudder and it is an insult to us that our government supported apartheid.  Its politics as usually and the UN is nothing more than the real base for terrorists, as they can always find safe haven in that institution of bureaucrats, hypocrites, communists, socialists, anti-Americans, muslims, Euro-brain washed and every other liberal in the world.  I really feel for you guys there and wish it could have been different.  Even alot of so called conservatives here supported apartheid, but that have no idea what it meant, so they were ignorant.  But, that is no excuse.  Over here with the present elections, it is said.  On the Democratic side, we have liberals with no experience and the complete lack of intestinal fortitude and on the Republican side, supposedly conservative, we have only 2 candidates who are to the right of center.  That would be Romney and Thompson.  John McCain served our country well, but has lost sight of what his service was for and this hillbilly Huckabee is a snake oil salesman dressed in preacher's clothing.  While serving the Southern Baptist Convention, he basically let the liberal side takeover the convention.  Regardless, the point being, is that our country, with people such a Ted Kennedy, Jane Fonda and countless liberals who have never served this country in the armed forces, make decisions purely to get a vote and that means giving a hand out, creating a welfare state.  In turn the welfare state looking for hand outs, always supports those who are in the same shoes that they are in and in doing so, brings out the wealthy so called enlightened do gooder liberals who bring out and fund the protests, signs, banners and boycots of products, that then in turn affect your country.  Enough of this diatribe.  May Mandela rest in the dung of many animals.  By the way, I do love the Pinotage wine, a cross between the Pinot Noir grape and what the French call the Hermitage grape or Syrah.  Great wine.

What both of you said is the sad truth. It is weird how decent people can be lead along the garden path by such immoral scum as politicians.
I have a business partner in Europe. The Europeans have actively supported the anti-apartheid movement and allowed all kinds of nationalities into their country. Now, when it is to late, do they wake up and suddenly see that their way of life and culture is being overtaken by Muslim culture and the Morrocans etc. They are now suddenly trying to repatriate them and place all kinds of bans on further immigration etc.
The same in the UK.
I really have a good laugh when he moans about all the Muslim schools and mosques going up, how the Morrocans are drawing State Social Grants etc. Then I remind him of how his country and a few others lovvvvedd them all not so long ago!!!
Anyway, no offense taken Dolphin, just thought I would get something off my chest!
No more political ramblings from me, this is a gun forum and soon I will have my Remington, which I will celebrate with a little Pinotage, make that a lot!
