I just got word that I will be using an 8 MM Mauser (long barrel) for my hunt this year. Yeah I know that it is huge blunderbuss but a guy has gotta do what a guy's gotta do. My question is I am looking at a Nikon Buckmaster for the scope option as it seems to be the best deal for a long action gun in the price range that I can afford. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

In that price range and for your affordability, the Buckmaster is a great and one of the best choices! The 3x9 is perhaps more variable than needed for the 8mm Mauser, but for added versatility, you can always mount the Nikon on another hunting rifle too!..........

I will be hunting in the mountains of southwest Oregon and North Central Washington. It is somewhat open country because of clear cuts , but still a lot of wood to walk through. Deer and elk will be the game and probably that crazy squrriel that won't leave me alone. Yeah sure you betcha, an 8mm after a squirrel. Anyway, the price range is between $150- $200

for another $20 or so more than your budget you could step up to a nikon team primos which is the old nikon monarch and a better scope than the buckmaster

Thanks ya'll. It is good to know that I am on the right track. Any suggestions on where to go online to get a good deal? Or maybe I will just have to find a way to get out of the house and do some serious shopping

You mentioned Blunderbuss. What kind of rifle are you going to be using? An older M98 Mauser? Is it all drilled and tapped and ready to go? The 8mm will certainly flatten the game that's for sure. If you have a big iron sight in the way, you might need a LONG scope to clear any "obstacles". Speaking of Nikons and the SampleList ( which is here on this very website...) you might look at the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5X to 14 scope which is quite long and has a gradual taper on its objective bell which would probably clear any large, old iron sights that might be sticking up in the way on your barrel. Of course, I don't know what rifle you're talking about yet.
Anyway, the Nikon 4.5X14 Buckmaster is running $200 on the sample list--refurbished. The only downside is that is has a side focus parallax adjustment on it--which is not fatal, but it definitely is not a fixed focus scope...and I would want to check with the other fellas on this website to see how FAT the ocular eyepiece is---as far as bolt clearance is concerned...I don't know. I don't own one. But I've seen them on the samplelist and they look like a bargain.
What rifle are you talking about? --Ed

It is the M98 ( I think) It was a sniper rifle in WWI. My wives' grandfather brought it home and sporterized it to make a really sweet gun. I have been told that it is ready to receive a scope. I don't pick it up until next weekend. Anyway, I just found a site called Ultimate Arms and they are selling a scout type mount for the M98. Do you know anything about these guys? The whole package is very inexpensive so I am probably not looking at quality item, but they offer rings and a special mount to that gets over the rear sight. Thanks for the reply

OK...the rifle has been sporterized! ( I was imagining that your were going to be climbing mountains with a nine pound rifle about 52 inches long...with a 16 oz scope on top of it!!) So thats a good thing. So I would imagine the rifle is ready for scopes with holes already drilled and bent bolt, etc.
Well, if you use the rear sight for mounting your rings you don't need to worry about obstacles in the way! I have seen photos of some of those types of arrangements. They seem to be a little high so that eliminates the concern over FAT eyepieces, too. And a scout system too.
Well, all you need to do is get your hands on it and put a scope on top! --Ed
