I have a Bushnell 3x9x50 Legend that I bought as a "sorta" low end scope.  Turns out to be a great scope for me.  Very clear and bright at dusk.  I have a rifle that needs a new scope and am considering the Elite 3200 3x9x50 with firefly and rainguard. Here are my questions.....
The Elite has Multi coated optics but the Legend has Fully multi coated optics.  Isnt fully multi coated better?
The Legend has 91% light trasmission wereas the 3200 has 93%. Not alot of difference is it?
I really "think" I want the firefly reticle, but is the Elite worth 100.00 more than the legend??  Going by the specs here on this site, the legend is as good or better scope than the Elite as far as optics.  I know it doesnt have the raingaurd, but the rifle this scope is going on will not see the rain if I can help it!!
ANYWAY, i am hoping for some feedback from some Bushnell users on this.
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

Jeff

 Welcome!
I think you have some good questions there, and others will be here shortly to begin answering them. You may wish to also consider the Bushnell 4200 series.  They are considered by many here to be significantly better than the 3200 for not too much more money.
 Great sig-line BTW...

Jeffrey...........................My advice is this! While they last, go with the Elite 4200 in the 3-9x40 for $289 and scrap the 3200 firefly 50mm idea! Your 1st priority is optical quality or superiority, which the 4200 will certainly deliver over the 3200.........You didn`t have the "firefly" in the past and you were ok without it! Right? If it`s not broke, then why fix it!!!.............WinkWinkWink

The 4200 is an option!!  I can live without the firefly, but wont I be giving up some light gathering ability by going with a 3x9x40??
Thanks for the help!!!

You will be giving up nothing in light gathering ability by going to the 40mm 4200! A 50mm objective adds weight and a higher profile to a rifle! The key to low light hunting is to keep your power turned down as much as possible!! A 50mm 3200 will not fill your tags any better than a 40mm 4200!

According to the specs here on this site , the 4200 has 95% light gathering, the 3200 has 90% and the Legend has 91%.  The 4200 and the Legend has FULLY multicoated optics and the 3200 doesnt.  Big Squeeze, you are slowly talking me into a 3x9x40 4200!!!

Not much more dough. Probably be the last scope I buy for this rifle!

I had just always assumed the 50mm gathered more light.  I do like the low profile of a 3x9x40 scope though!!

Can anyone enlighten us to the difference between coated, multi-coated and fully multi-coated scopes?

The larger objective will only let you use slightly MORE magnification in low light it will not make the scope brighter if you stay at your exit pupil size or lower. I'm totally spoiled by the 4200 elites, firefly while a nice feature doesn't mean nearly as much to me as the rainguard. Also remember......two scopes with full multi coating may 1. have differing quality and content coatings. 2. may have differing number of layers of coatings.

Full marks , Cyborg
  • Coated: A single layer is on at least one lens surface.
  • Fully-coated: A single layer is on all air-to-glass surfaces.
  • Fully multi-coated: Multiple layers are on all air-to-glass surfaces.

Sorry for the loaded question, but the reason I asked this was that I read in a book called Precision Shooting at 1000yds, that the writer states that fully multi-coated meant that not only was the lens surfaces coated, but also that the internal tube etc. was coated.

Just wondered if some-one else understood it like that.

Also sorry to highjack thread, but the opening question also asked about lens coatings, which got me thinking.

There are manufacturers that multi coat all lenses, internal as well as external. Which is True fully multi-coated lenses. The cheaper manufacturers advertise fully multi-coated, which are only the external lens surfaces, this should read as multi-coated. They are getting away with this due to the trivialized definitions as to what is truly what.
I read this somewhere I wish I could remember where.
