I'm going to get a .460 S&W RIFLE barrel for my T/C Encore. What Scope would you guys buy. I'll be deer hunting in wooded areas (100 yards and in). Which scope in the $400.00 range would ya'll pick? I have heard good stuff about the Bushnell 4200s....are they better than a Leupold VX III???

Guys, he's hunting in the woods at less than 100 yards. Why pay for so much more magnification (and size) than you'll ever be able to use under those conditions? Use that money toward better glass and a heavy reticle. 3x magnification tops.

Ronk is right here!!! He`s shooting a 460 S&W, not a long range mag!!!......Keep your magnification down and keep your field of view WIDE!! At most for any variable, a 1.5x4 would be excellent. In the fixed power area, a 4x or less would also fill the bill.....The 2x7`s & above, though good scopes, are too much magnification at 100 yards or less for hunting.............Unfortunately, the Elite 4200 is not available in the variable or fixed powers that would best suite this rifle and caliber! Too bad! A great selection of scopes is not one of the 4200`s best attributes!!!!......Keep your magnification down!!!

Well, a 2-7 or 3-9x will certainly work if he remembers to keep it turned down, but he's still paying for some attributes which would be useless to him, and carrying around more weight/ bulk to boot. There aren't as many good options in that class as there should be, as Squeeze noted, but there are a few. Don't rule out close- combat style optics and red-dot sights either.

Tucker............BTW, the 4200 is a little better optically than the VX3.......Did a little homework and came up with following choices which will best suit your needs!!!! These 4 scopes are at $400 and under. If I were you, I`d consider these!!................Burris 1.5-5x32 Sig. Safari @ $349.....................Leupold 1.5-5x20 VX3 @$399. Don`t be fooled by its smaller objective at only 20mm. You will still have an excellent FOV.....................Leupold FX2 4x fixed by 33mm obj. @ $269.......................Weaver Grand Slam 1.5-5x32 @ $329, The Grand Slam is an excellent scope for the bucks, great glass & is recoil proof. Many shooters put these on 454 Casull handguns............................For your rifle, my 1st choice from these is the Leupold 1.5-5x20 VX3.

Word!!
I'm frankly bewildered more people don't use red dots or holo sights for deer hunting in dense timber and or brush.
I hunted one deer season with a Comp M2 Aimpoint 4 MOA dot.

CT...........................If his budget was say up to $575, the I would have reco`d the Trijicon 1.5-4x24. That would be even a better choice than the four I previously mentioned and gives the same features as you reco`d.................BTW, the Trijicon`s arrow, due to the Tritium, will continue to illuminate in the dark for any night time hunting!!

Unless you are trying to use the gun under pistol class case rules I'd use a 45-70 and wait until some more load development and maybe even an improvement in the popularity of the brass. I've been on the bleading edge once too many times...

Anybody remember Weaver's Qwik-Point? Odd-looking thing that used ambient light to illuminate a 6 (?) minute red dot with no magnification. My family killed a lot of deer with them mounted on 12 gauge Remington slug guns.

You guys rock on!! You guys advise is great!
I just see more and more the practicality of red dot scopes in certain situations, that's all.

I looked at Bushnell's web site and they have a 4200 in 1.5-6 x 36....This would be ideal...but I have a Burris 3-9 x 36 (or 32 I can't remember) Shortmag and I don't think it does very well in low light. Someone set me straight...How much difference is there in a 40mm vs. 20mm during the last few minutes of legal shooting time?? I'll put a 50mm on it if REALLY helps. I hope this doesn't bore ya'll, but I'm a more of a hunter than a shooter.

Well I suppose to be an odd man out here I find 2.5 or 3 power to be more than fine for close shots.....but 8 or 9 is really nice for target and load work at a 100yds. Guess I prefer a variable cause the better ones don't change POI or eye relief with power change and offer more than one power for more than one use. Both conquests fell right in budget and I also like the best optics available for $ to spend. I'll stick to my recommendation.
