I was sighting in with a pretty sharp shooter, and he helped me set my scope right. I noticed that after he would make an adjustment on windage or elevation, he would lightly tap the top of the setting with a screwdriver handle. I stress lightly tap it.
I asked him why, and he said it seats in the notch better. He said he was taught this way and it stays where you set it. How would I know? Is there any truth to this? If it is a good tip, then I suppose it would fit in this catagory. Thanks!

I was tought to tap lightly on the scope after making any adjustments to it.The reason behind it is to move the inside of the scope to keep it from settling and getting stuck.I have no idea if this is the truth but i tap mine just out of habite. This is a great question thanks for asking.I'm edger to find out some other reply's also.

I've always done this after adjustments......some scopes it doesn't seem to effect, others it prevents the first shot from doing it for you (hence your adjustment not taking effect till the second shot). I always found it had the most effect on the old friction leupold vari x ll's. It seems unnecessary with my 4200 and conquests.

It is also something I do out of habit. The back of a used shell works pretty neatly. I do this to bed the adjustment. Maybe it has a use, maybe not! I have lately taken to dialing 4 clicks past my adjustment and back up again, for the same reason.

I'll step out on a limb and say its not needed with a scope that you can actually feel the clicks. I did it on some of my older Leupold's that featured a turn (more of a slide) but no click, but have found that with the newer model scopes that definately have a stopping point, its not needed. If you need to hit today's high dollar scopes to make them right, time to look at another brand IMO. |

By tapping the scope on the adjustment turret you're using the vibration to allow the erector spring to remove the adjustment screw backlash.
Old timers did this because scope quality wasn't all that great and many times it would take one shot to accomplish the same thing as tapping...........but you lost the first shot in the process.
The hammer free rule of thumb is always adjust into the spring tension. Works every time on every scope made .

Thank you Mike and absolutely correct.
The tap is more important when backing the adjustment out than in, also. The reason being that when rotating in, the thread is working harder against the spring than when backing out. The spring should already be seated on the trailing edge of the thread incline when rotating CW. It's the same principle that machinists, not using mills with ball screws, have been doing forever.

I just got done watching "Shooting USA" and they were filming a training special for a SWAT team with Trijicon's ACOG scope...... and the Trijicon guy told them to hit the scope with their hands after they made an adjustment, and I'm not talking about a little tap! He wacked it pretty good!

I guess I just never done it as with my hunting scopes once they were set I never touched them again. If my weavers and bushnells were like that I had no idea. My first 2 guns were gifts and already had scopes mounted and zeroed and my third one I bought used with a Leupold and it was right on so I never messed with it. Since then I have never noticed a scope to do that, so I guess I missed the good old days.
