Does anyone have any experience with the RCBS rotary case tumbler or any other rotary type case cleaner for that matter?  I have heard that they are very quiet and effective, yet take very long to clean.  Sometimes as long as 12 hours to clean.

I don't really want the noise of a basic vibratory tumbler, but I do realize they clean somewhat faster.

Any detailed advice would help.

Almost 10 years ago a friend recommended I try a Thumblers Tumbler.  Works great.  Very quiet.  I use crushed walnut for the media and a bit of the Dillon blue stuff/polish.  It is still running with the original belts.  I use it about 5-6 times a year.

I have a timer in line with the unit and usually leave it running overnight.

I had minimal experience with a vibratory.  The one I had failed during the third use.

Here's my tumbling apparatus. Frankford Arsenal.

That said, I haven't used the poor thing in over 3 years... I guess it still works OK.

I don't even tumble my brass anymore.

I just reload for my .308 and maybe put together 50 or 60 rounds a session. I just wipe them down the 0000 steel wool as part of my case prep.

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

Its part of RCBSs tinker toy set-- don't-- get a vibratory-- tumblers are adaptations from laprodory.

lap,i,dar,y       (l─p'ĭ-d├r'┘)  Pronunciation Key
n.   pl. lap,i,dar,ies
  1. One who cuts, polishes, or engraves gems.
  2. A dealer in precious or semiprecious stones.

Damn, Dale, you always drop new words on me

I use a Lyman vibratory, it is loud but fast. Couple of hours and the brass is ready. The rotary is quieter and no doubt cleaner, though.

You guys use corn cob media or walnut hulls?? Pyro the corn cob work OK?

I went to the walnut for speed and to clean the nasty ones, but I hated that red rouge it would leave on the brass...and my hands...and everything....

yeah cheap the corn works pretty good, just gotta make sure you get it all out of the case when there done, but there isnt any mess like you are talking about with the walnut shells, i usually let em go for a couple of hours if i really want them to shine let em shake for about 6hrs and they look brand new.

things to do with corn cob-tumbling media

add brasso run for an hour then add cases

add mineral spirits if cases are really dirty and oily.

use aluminium oxide instead of red oxide as the cutting agent

add baking soda to neutralize ammonia caused by nitrates

watch the ratio of media to # of cases, if too many cases will hit against each other and cause nicks

tumble already load rds to remove lub  (knew a custom reloader who did this in a cement mixer)

change on occasion

not enough to be a liquid, just enough to "wet" the media.

about that just enough to wet the media

the warning is geared to the old tumbler types that had seals on them and one used a water slurry to "cut" the rocks.
