Hope to get some opinions on a low power scope for my AR carbine. I'll use it mainly for coyote hunting. Shots will be from 45 out to 200 yards. The shots could be on running coyotes but not if I can help it. I can't make up my mind between the Weaver V3, K2.5 or K4. I know with lower power scopes there's better field of view and brighter but will 3-4X be enough for those 200 yard shots? Are there any drawbacks on having a low power scope other than shooting really long shots? |

For me 3-4X would not be enough for that range. I don't know what your budget is but I would consider something like a 1.5-6 variable. Several are out there, the new swaro Z6, Kahles makes a nice one too. You may need to borrow one and see if you think it's enough power for you to shoot at 200 yards, a coyote is a medium sized target so you might be ok. Here's a couple examples, give us some more info on your budget and maybe we can recommend something that fits it. Good luck.

Thanks.
My price range is around $150 and the Weavers fall into that range. Good scopes for that price. |

Yeah, take a look at these too, it's something to compare to at least. I think it would be a good magnification range if you're worried about 4 not being enough for 200 yards.

I've always liked the Weaver K Series myself. Priced right and still good quality.
If you were caught in a situation with more magnification and a running yote it would be pretty hard to get on target quick. If you had ample time to take a shot then yea a little more magnification would allow for a slightly better shot. With what you're doing a low power would suit you the best. The Classic K4 would probably be perfect.
No other drawbacks. |

While deer hunting all last week I set my 3X9 scope on 3X and left it there just to see how the targets looked using that lower power. I scoped a lot of deer at distances anywhere from 20 yards out to 250 yards. All of the deer I looked at at those distances were small, young deer and I didn't feel under scoped at all. Matter of fact, it seemed as though I held steadier.
( No fawns or monster bucks were harmed or killed during this experiment ) This rough experiment convinced me to try the Weaver V3- 1X3. If it doesn't work for me on the AR I can always mount it on my muzzleloader and may do that anyway during the season. Thanks for the help. |

I ruminated on this myselfa while back ago. I took my 6o pound boxer out and tied him up to a stake I hammered in the middle of this field. I stepped back and scope spotted him with a buddies 1.5x4. This was done between 30 and 200 yds. Up until 150 yds, I never had more need than 1.5-2.5. After that, 3 was good but I felt more comfortable with 4. I'd feel pretty safe with the V3. If you can spring for a bit more, the Elite 3200 in Firefly with the above mentioned ranges would be perfect. Thicker reticle and a reticle you can see after dusk could come in handy for you.

Hey. Good idea staking out your dog to compare scopes. I never thought of that. My
16 pound Jack Russell would be a lot smaller than a coyote at 200 yds. even though she thinks she's a Doberman.
Were you considering a low powered scope? What did you get?
Since the V3 is on the way I'll see how it does. The 3200 sounds good too if the V3 is not enough X.
