I suppose like most venison the taste is in the preparation. Kudu, springbuck and eland account for the best venison. I have cut some kudu steaks this season which is the best I have ever had. tender and not "wild" tasting. Mostly we make biltong or jerky as you call it. Also dry sausage. We spice it all up and add sheep fat and hang it out to dry.

Other wise if the venison is not tasty we go for the next best. The Atlantic Ocean is about 5 miles from my house.

Hunting in a foreign country can be a problem due to diplomatic reasons. In other words should say an American be killed by accidental gunfire, all hell breaks loose on the diplomatic front. So for this reason a foreigner is only supposed to hunt with a registered Proffesional Hunter, who typically charges about $250 a day for his services. then there are the gameranchers who thinks everyone not born in South Africa is a zillionaire and he rips them off price-wise etc. It messes up our own hunting, because said rancher says" Hey, if you do not pay x amount for the hunt, I'll bring American hunters with the mighty $$$.

But generally speaking, if you hook up with a mate or a non-ripoff situation, a lic is about $2 - 15 and game from $50 (springbuck) to $350 (kudu). The game price is set by the landowner and is different from farm to farm. You also have to pay the landowner about $50 per day to sleep over and hunt.

Not if you are with the correct crowd. Most PH have a professional business catering for wealthy hunters looking for trophies. These guys and their game is expensive. If you however hook up with a registerd PH who only did the course for the love of it, or does not run his own business, and you go for non-trophy stuff it need not be expensive.

The other trick would be not to speak in the presence of the landowner, because if he picks up on your American accent, his eyes glaze over and rings like he has just hit the jackpot at Las Vegas Ching ching $$$$$$$
