My kid worked at the new Cabelas thats getting ready to open here in Lacey Washington. So he gets to go in and make a purchase at a significant discount.

He is looking for a pair of new binocs for hunting out here.

Prefers a 10x50 for around $600

During our muzzleloader elk season he got ot try a pair of Nikon Monarch atb and a higher end pair of Leopolds. To tell you the truth he liked my Carson 10X50 XMs better. So did I.The Carsons were clearer and brighter.

Some people on here probably think I'm crazy. But I would love to talk him into getting something else at Cabelas and ordering a pair of new Carson 10X50 XMs in HD. But if that fails, what do you think would be the best glass Cabelas has in the $600 range.

I hope I can go with him.But if not I'll send my Carsons for him to use as a comparison.

 Thanks for your help folks.

At muzzleloading distances you don't need a 10x and probably not even a 50mm.

Too much magnification and too heavy, unless you're not planning on doing any walking.

Thanks for the input Birdwatcher.

We have compacts for when we are in the brush. These will be used for Longer distance and low light glassing

Still looking for a 10x though. Doesnt have to be 50 can be 40 or more

Well Cabelas has a fine selection to choose from. However since this site is opperated by SWFA I would like to suggest perhaps looking at what they have to offer.  My suggestion in your price range is to go to this sites SAMPLE LIST and look at the Kahles.

http://www.samplelist.com/default.aspx?display_num=10&mf g_selection=5&prod_type=2&hide_sold=false

They are very nice binoculars made in Austria and perhaps one of the best out there for under $1000. The sample list will save you some money and you could end up with a $899 pair of binoculars for $599.

Also someone suggested the Kowa binoculars.  No experience with them personally but their spotting scopes are top knotch and SWFA has the same set of nocs for even a better deal

http://www.swfa.com/c-877-kowa-bd42-series-binoculars.aspx

Also a few others that come to mind are

Pentax SP's

http://www.swfa.com/pc-1820-127-pentax-10x43-dcf-sp-binocula r.aspx

Weaver GrandSlam (not quite as nice as the PentaxSP (close) )

http://www.swfa.com/pc-5881-863-weaver-10x42-grand-slam-bino cular.aspx

DocterOptic  (the forgotten German Binoculars) (good glass just not a lot of customer support in the US)

http://www.swfa.com/pc-10111-1419-new-docter-10x42-binocular .aspx

Lastly MINOX BD

http://www.swfa.com/pc-1749-1445-minox-bd-10x42-br-binocular .aspx

ALL of the above nocs are very good quality and it may just come down to personal preference.  At the price you are looking at you will get from any of the above great performance and I agree with the above that you definitly do not need a 50mm objective.  10 power is a personal choice.....I hunt areas that are high mountains and deep canyons so I like the 10x nocs if I was hunting areas of heavy timber or in places where shots were going to be pretty close I would lean more to an 8x or even a 7x.  Keep in mind that (glass being of the same quality and objectives being the same size) a lower power binocular will give you more field of view and a brighter image.

Good luck, also keep us posted on what you decide and follow up with your impressions once you have used the binouclar.
