I just got a new Leupold Vari X II. I sighted my gun in this morning and I love the scope. I noticed when I got home what looked like specks of oil on the lens, both front and rear. It cant see them when I look through the scope, but when I look at the lens I can see them. How do I clean the lenses? or should I just leave it alone?

Zeiss makes cleaning cloths that have worked well for me. They are pre moistened with some solution. Alcohol based I suppose.
Acetone, 100% pure and uncontaminated works wonderfully too.
Make sure before you use anything, that you get all the dust, dirt, etc. off the lenses FIRST!! Compressed air works best or a camel brush.
Clean as least as possible. Keep finger prints off the lenses at all cost. Edited by cheaptrick |

I dont concur with using a lens pen. The brush end is OK, but the cleaning pad on the other end picks up dust, dirt, debrise, and you are actually rubbing that stuff into your scope lens.
Bad juju on glass and coatings!!! |

A camera lens brush is best. Treat and clean like a good camera lens. However camera lens don't get their barrels cleaned. So use a good lens cleaner from Bausch n Lomb or Zweiss. Thing to remember that those delicated coatings you just paid for can be rubbed off. (reason for the comment above). Lavacol which is 90% ethyl alchol is the best.

Also - always be sure to put on lens caps when cleaning the barrel. The smallest breeze will cause solvent to blow back on the lens'. Good Shooting! :-)

I use a brush and Q-tips dipped in Zeiss cleaner.

Canned air (the kind you get for your keyboard) to remove all contaminants, followed by Zeiss solution and a Pentax lens cloth makes them as good as new.
