Hey guys, I need help on picking a scope and thought I'd come ask the experts.  I'll be mounting this scope on a 700P LTR in .308 and will be punching holes in paper anywhere from 100-500 yards.  Just wondering about your general thoughts on these scopes?  Is there a large difference between the 3200 line and the 4200 line?  Thanks in advance.

what you would gain in magnification (3200), in my opinion, would be trumped by the increase in resolution (4200).

elite 4200 is fantastic glass.  9 power isn't GREAT for 500 yards, but would do a decent job.

welcome to the OT.

J

Welcome to The OT!!

I agree with JB, the 4200 is the better scope in spades.

Are you open to other scope choices for that LTR, besides the 2 you mentioned?

If the answer is yes, do you have a budget in mind?

Have you considered target knobs or a hold over reticle?

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

Welcome aboard. I am as big of fan of 4200's you will likely find, but lately, I seem to be trumped by Big Squeeze here. (grin). To answer you question, what jonbravado stated was kind of my thoughts as well. You are talking about two very different scopes designed for two different purposes. In my experience when you go over 12x or 14x you better have really good glass to back up it's potential. The 4200 3-9x40 would be most popular for big game hunting IMO. If you are just going to punch paper with the LTR (nice gun by the way) maybe you could look at the 5-15x40 3200 as I believe it comes with targets type turrets. For out to 500 yrds 15x should be plenty. As far as the actual difference between a 3200 and 4200 optically, I can see a difference. In addition, 4200's are much more durable. I hope this helps. If not ask away.

This is my first foray into target shooting, so pardon me if I'm not quite up to par on all the lingo.   I lurked a little bit before joining and I've seen that practically everyone loves the 4200's.  I'm mainly only shooting 100 yards at the moment since that's the nearest range, but that will eventually open up to 300 and 500 yards on down the road, so I figured that might be a good choice unless it can't do long distance.  The only reason I listed that other 3200 was because I found a fairly good deal on it, but I'm definitely open to other scopes, as long as we can keep them in the $275-$375 range (used is okay too if anybody knows of a good deal somewhere).

My only experience previously was with a Simmons Aetec 2.8-10x44 that I felt was not up to the task of even 100 yards.  I don't know that a 3-9x40, for me based off of that experience, is enough magnification for the sort of target shooting I'm wanting to do.

Merlin......................Since you can foresee punching some paper out to 500 yards, then your top priority is quality in optics,,,, first!! The 4200 will certainly do the job without any question. Rather than consider the 3200 simply because it`s a good deal, you should consider the 4200 as an investment in better quality. It will certainly add more, for a lifetime, to your shooting and hunting enjoyment!!.........If I were you, it would certainly be worth the added dollars to seriously consider the 4X16 Elite 4200! With that, you will not only have great glass and the Rainguard, but you will also have a well balanced long range target scope and you will also have an excellent shorter to long range hunting scope as well..... Just maybe, some cake and eat it too? Best of everything without compromising!!!!

You spend more time behind the glass for target shooting than hunting. For this the 4200 is better than the 3200. I would take the 4200 for hunting, too, and the 3-9 is a best buy.

Welcome to O.T.

If you wish to have good combo long range, target and varmit scope ONLY, then fine! Although my personal preference is the 4200, either of those two would be great.......For general all-round use and if you wish to include medium to big game hunting, this magnification is way too much and not needed!!......Long range varmits and paper punching only!!!!

Tough choice.

I had the Nikon with a Mil Dot. GREAT scope for LR shooting. I'm sure the 4200 would be just as nice.

The Nikon you mentioned is the older version Monarch.

Does the 4200 come in a 6.5-20x?

Here's a 4200 with Mil Dot.

The Nikon I had.

Big game hunting isn't in the picture at all, for the time being this is going to only be used for punching paper.  I think between the two I might just go for the one I can get the better deal on, which at the moment is the 4200.

Excellent suggestion as well.

Fellas, we are going to have Merlin's head on swivel with all these choices.....

BUT....to make it a little more interesting, here's a pic of a Remington 700 with the Nikon....

The 4200 is nice glass, so is the Nikon.

Beware of NIKONITIS though, what it has done to Cheaptrick well it's just terrible.

Personally, I love the 4200s and Monarchs.  I own only one 3200 and it is the fixed power 10x model and the optics are excellent and I cannot tell the difference between it and the previously mentioned scopes, maybe becaused it is a fixed power model.  I have never looked through another 3200, but it seems to me that the glass should be of reasonable quality to make accurate shots to 500 yards.  So, it really boils down to how much money you want to relieve yourself of.  The higher the power the better the target size in your scope, but you get less depth of vision and more pronounced movement of the target as you shake.  So if you shake alot, keep in mind, the higher the power, the more this is going to be magnified.  Just some points to consider.
