I have been shooting a savage .17HMR with a BSA sweet 17 on it, (cheap scope I know but its just my toy gun, and much cheaper than a conquest). Anyway, my five shot groups are stringing horizontally. I was wondering if this is a case of the scope not holding zero, or the barrel starting to heat up after a few shots, or some other sort of problem. My five shot groups right now are running about 1.5moa, but are dead nuts vertically. I feel my groups could be a lot tighter if the horizontal stringing wasn't so bad. Anything I can do? By the way the gun is a stainless heavy barrel synthetic stock model with accutrigger. Thanks for your input.

Scope or you. Let somebody else shoot it and see if they have the same problem.

Start with the simplest first........Let your barrel cool at least 3 minutes in-between shots. If you group closer, then its barrel heat. If not, then it could be you! Clean your rifle every 3 to 5 rounds or after every group sequence. And of course, make sure your rings and mounts are secure. Those are your freebies to try first!......If you still have problems, then it could be the scope....

It seems I may have over-estimated my group size some also. I took the target to work and measured the holes center to center with a caliper, and came up with .812. This was a different target than I have been using, and the group looks huge on this target. This small of error could be breath control, or the very slight breeze affecting the tiny 17gr. bullet I suppose. Wind was 5mph or less, but not consistant. That might be enough to move that little bullet a bit. Maybe the combination of the wind and barrel heat. I don't know.......will just have to shoot some more. Thats too bad.

If the other suggestions don't solve your problem here are two other options to consider. 1. Try a different scope and see if you get the same results. 2. If you have a chronograph it might be worth checking the velocity spread of the rounds you are shooting. If they aren't consistent (within about 1%) that can cause stringing. |

Aren't those little buggers fun to shoot! My two Boys and I each have are own and we have a hoot shooting them. Each one is a little different......easier to keep seperate........ mine is blued reg. barrel with synthetic stock, Accu trigger and 4X32 scope (cheap for now)...... my 13 yr old's is Stainless reg. barrel with synthetic stock, reg. trigger and 3-9X32 scope (cheap) ...... my 11 yr old's is Left hand blued Heavy barrel with wood stock, Accu trigger and 4X32 scope (cheap as well). Those Accu triggers are so cool!
We love to shoot blue rocks and little silhouettes as well as targets on the range and they are the bomb for squirrels!
I haven't noticed any issues with ours and .812 sounds pretty good to me at 100 yds. Good luck Edited by Tip69 |
