Good morning, new here to the site but wanted to get some feedback on a problem I had. I have a Remington 30-06 modle 7400 with a Leupold VX II scope 3*9 gold ring. Sighted it in Houston TX. at 100yds and was dead on. Traveled to Oregon and was 12" low at 100 yards. Re sighted the gun and went hunting. Now for the bad news. Missed first deer (5*5) at 165 yards, missed 2nd deer (4*5) at 170yards. Finally borrowed a 7 mag and drilled one at 260yards. I talked to Leupold this morning and they said there was definetelly something wrong with my scope. Basically after you take a shot, the recoil will knock the scope off of site even if you just hit the center of the target. Has anyone had this problem with their scopes from Leupold? Leupold said they would fix the scope but that doesn't make me feel any better about missing the deer of a lifetime. Any feedback would be great. Good luck hunting. bigtimedeer

Feedback should be no problem on this forum. Some new guy with a kid-movie name will tell you the Leupold ain't broke, it's you - but don't listen to him.
I have had similar experiences, though not exactly the same: I had an older tactical scope with a broken reticule, they fixed it, it broke again. I had an elevation knob that seized (different scope), took the knob off, saw nothing, tried to turn it, no luck; that was my last Leupold ever. I have made exactly the case you stated in trying to help people understand that, yes, a $1,600 scope is not always needed or wanted, but a $500 scope that makes you miss a once-in-a-lifetime shot on a $5,000 hunt is no good deal. My advice, much to Chris' consternation: never buy Leupold. Someone makes a better scope for less money. |

By the way, where you shoot in Houston? I recommend American out off 10. They have 100, 200, 300, and 600 yard lines. If ever you venture out and someone is shooting at 600, stop by and say hi, chances are, it'll be me. I go every few weeks and have never (NEVER) seen anyone else on the 600 yard line.
Carters up north has a 100 yard line that actually ranges at 93 yards. There is a range in Conroe where the skeet shooters pepper the rifle shooters. And there is a range just north-east of Houston called Thunder Range where, if you get shot or hurt, the high "range safety officer" will simply roll you into a hole and doze over you. Good luck! |

Well if all the screws are tight on the mounts and the scope is moving off center during recoil I'd say you definitly have a problem with a scope. Leupold has a very good factory warranty to so the good thing is if you send it back they should make it right.
As for Leupold as a scope choice, well many on this forum say you can do better for the same or even less money and I tend to agree. Many companies have caught up with and in some cases surpassed Leupolds performance. I love their warranty, I love the fact that its stilll an American company using American workers (that matters to me) what I don't like is that fact that for many sportsman they believe all the marketing hype and think that other scopes are not worthy of a rifle if it does not have the golden ring... that is non sense.
Leupold still makes a fine scope and I am sure that they will make yours right. Optics can be fun nothing wrong with owning different brands to mix it up a bit.
Take care and welcome to the forums AC |

strange i've had the same problem with zeiss, redfield and burris, same guy works at all those places I guess. usually increases in altitude will cause increases in bullet speed causing the bullet to arrive sooner, in other words shoot lower. although 12 in is a bit much -- I'd expect closer to 3-4 in, a good 7400 will match most bolt guns so I'm wondering here if you mount wasn't loose. another possibility, the bolt on gas guns wreck havoc with most scopes, sense they are not designed to recoil forward, and usually leo (even the II) take it pretty well, (ripped up a conquest on an ar10 in about 500 rd and a redfield on an ak). have you benched the gun to see if error is repeatable??

I plan on taking it to the range this week to see what happens before I send it back to Leupold. I'm curious to say the least. I also bought the scope on the gun, so didn't have much a choice in that. So, if I were to sell this scope and purchase another one, would you have any suggestions on what to look at for the same amount of money.

I would try a Bushnell Elite 4200 3x9x40,,can be had around $250-$275....or a Weaver Grand Slam 3x10x40 for similar money ( my 7400 30-06 wears one and no issues in 3 years of use) ,,, As a note- not fond of Nikon ( crappy customer service and seems weird there are thousands of refurbs on the market )

I have a VXII 4x12AO, I've never had the problem you described and I've made kills up to 300 yards on Black Tails with it mounted on my 7mm. Sounds like an installation issue but if you send it back Leupold service is the best. You should get it back very quickly.

In my experience, Leupold has the best customer service of any company I have ever dealt with. Over more than 20 years of using their fine products, I have sent two in for service. I was thoroughly satisfied both times. I believe they will fix your scope and it will be good as new.

If you sell it (and they do have good resale value) get a 4200 elite or zeiss conquest. Either will have superior optics and lifetime warranties as well. As already said, leupold makes a good scope but there are better choices to be had.

I've been happy with my Leupolds. I think people greatly under estimate the importance of using top quality mounts to attach scopes to their rifles. I also think that it is important to take more than one rifle on an expensive hunt. I very seldom hunt with only one way to kill what I am after. I will at the least take a pistol along in addition to my primary weapon. S*** Happens, people who do not practice regularly with the particular firearm they intend to use are taking a huge risk of not knowing what it is going to do when they need it to work. If the problem is the scope Leupold will most likely be able to fix it, but if you bought the rifle with the scope on it USED you have no idea how it was treated before you got it and likely as not there is a reason that the last guy got rid of it. There are lots of factors at work all of which can cause a problem with accuracy. I have had some Encore rifle barrels that shoot very well and some that would only shoot well with a particular weight of bullet and some that never grouped well and that is just the barrel so sometimes something as simple as the way the crown on the barrel is cut can cause a unacceptable pattern. There are things that a good gunsmith can do to improve the accuracy of a rifle. Some bolt guns right out of the factory need the action trued because things are not as they are supposed to be. I dont know exactly which rifle you have but the scope may not be the problem at all as it is just one of the factors. Ammunition must remain consistent same brand same weigh bullet etc. Altitude humidity temperature angle of the shot as well as wind will affect where the bullet goes. But the most likely suspect for the kind of problem described is the mounts.
I had a remmington semi auto 30-06 that I traded off years ago because I could never get the accuracy which I could get with a bolt gun. Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - December/13/2007 at 09:53 |

There are definitely scopes that are prettier to look through than Leupolds, but I don't think any are more durable (some are as durable). Holding zero is the most important thing to me in a scope; if it doesn't do that, it don't matter how good you can see through it. Send your Leupold back and it will return fixed (or they may just send you a new scope). If you can't get comfortable with it (once something has broken I don't get over it) then sell it and get something else.
I've only had to send three scopes back, a Conquest, a Nikon Monarch, and a Burris Eurodiamond. The Zeiss came back better but still wouldn't hold zero. The Nikon came back worse than it was when I sent it in (looked like they had slopped grease all over the objective). The Burris came back with nothing done to it; they said it was fine (it wasn't).

I'd love to see someone take a Leupold and start pounding on it with IOR of similar size/configuration until one of them went belly up. Koshkin? Mike? Anybody interested?
And no, I'm not going to supply either scope for the experiment...

Interesting post...
1. Did you check your zero by firing before starting to hunt?
2. Did you travel by air, baggage handlers are rough on equipment
3. Were your bases and rings tight, you stated that the scope came with the rifle
so perhaps they were not tight?
Have several Leupolds, they have great customer service and stand by their warranty.
Have sent two back (one for inaccurate tracking, one for target knobs) and turn around
time was fast. Weaver will only provide warranty service if you are the original owner
with receipt and their new customer service leaves something to be desired.
Good luck

Leupold has good customer service and I believe that the Vari XII is a good scope, but for the money you have better scopes like the Bushnell Elite 4200 or Sightron II.The Vari XII also was mounted on a Remington 7400.Return the scope and do what I did, sell it on the internet.Leupold does hold there value and I made my money back.Try a Zeiss Conquest, it's much brighter and has better clarity but cost another $100.00 more. That's what I did and it's hard looking through my other scopes when I have a Zeiss, the clarity and light gathering is amazing.

good scope mounts are just as important or MORE important than the scope itself. furthermore TORQUE is very important - it it's tightened TOO tight or not tight enough, both are bad and can lead to inconsistancy or mechanical failure.
+1 on leupolds reputation for durability. but i haven't had a problem w/ any of my brands - even a tasco world class is repeatable w/ proper mounts.
but for the money - you just can't beat conquests or 4200's or kahles.
a very honorable mention for meopta meostar and monarch UCC's too.
sightron and ior are my next buys, hopefully - and both have great reps.
my 2 cents.
