I was doing some shooting today at 1204 yards and got a picture of the 12” balloons through the SS10X42 on my new 300WSM. This is the same rifle that I shot the jack rabbit at 504 yards. I set up 6 balloons at 1204 yards, 5 of them were 12” yellow and one was 8”Orange. I got out my old 300WSM with SS10X42M that I have not shot in almost 10 months and dialed up the SS 35 moa. The wind was about 10mph so I dialed left 7.5moa. I was using 200gr SMKs @ just over 2750fps. It took me 7 shots to hit the first 12” balloon and 3 shots to hit the second one. I got out the new 300WSM with a SS10X42 on it and dialed it up 30moa and 7 moa for wind. I am using 175gr Berger VLDs @ 3125fps . It took me 5 shots each to hit 2 of the 12” balloons.
The cross hairs of my SS10X42 are on one 12"yellow balloon, the second is 2 mils left and the 8' orange is just a little past 3 mils left. hard to see! About that time a Spectator showed up, It was a guy that stops by often, he asked what I was shooting at ? I grabbed a pair of binoculars for him to use and directed him to the spot I was shooting. I asked him if he could see the 2 balloons left on the hill. He said yes, A orange one and a yellow one! I told him how far away it was and I told him to keep focused on them because I was going to shoot at them with my .308. He looked me in the eye like he was ready to call BS but wasn’t sure. My 308 has an XOTIC 4-16X56 scope on it and the base is so slanted it is only 6.5 moa from bottoming out. I am shooting 168gr AMAX @2704 fps so I had to dial in 49 moa for elevation and 11 moa for wind. I shot and missed just to the right, I shot 3 more times, dialing even more for wind each shot. Finally on the 5th shot I hit the yellow 12” balloon with 13moa for wind. This guy was amazed even though it had taken so many shots I took aim at the orange 8” and got it first shot. afterwards he borrowed my Swarovski rangefinder to check the distance 4 or 5 times, he was amazed . I had a lot of fun and got lucky on that last shot but I wanted to share my story with all of you. |
