5280/3600 = 1.467 so if you can use something to scale a distance at a given range (mildots work for this as does using the posts in you duplex once you know the scale) it is quite simple, just watch the blade of grass as it bends carry that momentum over a known distance. Example would be 18 ft per second divided by 1.467 = 12.27 mph. it will take some practice but it will work, Good luck, and were glad to have you Hunting WELCOME to the OT |

Try this link. Hope it helps. All I can say from experience is that wind gusts over 80 knots will knock my horse over. Shouldn't have been out in that. Good luck hunting. |

Depending on the temp where you hunt you can often use mirage as a judge. (Not too often in the fall) Here is a good article. http://www.exteriorballistics.com/ebexplained/5th/32.cfm 0-3 mph - barely felt, smoke will drift 1-3 mph - will move dry tall grass 2-4 mph - you can just feel on your face, large leaf, light stems move like maple leaves 3-5 mph - can barely be felt on face 4-8 mph - will make small leaf, heavy stalks move like alder 5-6 mph - mirage tips 45 degrees 5-6 mph - flat lines a 24” piece of flagging ribbon 5-8 mph - tree leaves in constant motion 6-10 mph - will move the tips of short needle trees like larch & spruce 8-12 mph - will make brush like alder, small aspen etc start to move 8-12 mph - dust and loose paper moves 10+ mph - mirage starts to flat line 10+ mph - will make small trees start to move 15-20 mph -causes large trees to sway Edited by Graysteel |

two of graysteel's indicators above are really helpful, and are one of the reasons for advantages in using high magnifications when dealing with mirage although the shot may be taken at a lower power. when the mirage starts to tip, and when it seems to race accross the image plane in bubbles. at around 5 mph or race at 10 mph plus. a target grade 308 168 around 2700 fps will show 17 mins. of windage and almost 22 moa of lead. around 10 mph at 500 yds. sometimes particularly in the western high planes the wind can be blowing at angles on long shots. and the higher magnifications can help sort out the inconsistencies when full wind values are not the case. this can be seen when shooting over a wide ravine, and the wind for say 200 yards can have 1/4 value and the last 300 yds can be full value.

That scale only goes to 20 mph. Not much use in Oklahoma on most days. Thats where it needs to start.

Well there's always the strange looks followed by the pinching of the nose and running, that's a sure sign.
