Umm...... Pyro,   a few errors crepted in there!  And then you left out the all important 260 Remmie.

Would you mind doing a similar comparison using different bullet weights in the same calibre?  It might be revealing!

no errors there its all number for number from the same ballistic chart,

which calibers and which bullet weights are you looking at?

One of the calibers you mention pyro, is the 280Rem (which I prefer to the 270).  3150fps with 140gr is a little bit hotter than most loads.  WIth factory loads that would be about the right speed for Federal High Energy or Hornady Light Magnum loads.  That would not be easy to duplicate with handloads without exceeding the SAAMI pressure limits.

In my (perhaps not very extensive) experience, most 140gr loads in the 280Rem run around 3000 to 3050 fps, which is still faster than the 270.  For just about anything I may need to do with my 280Rem, though, I found that factory Federal loads shoot really well in my Tikka.  I stocked up with 140gr TBBCs when they high energy ammo was on close out (this the 2150fps load) and have enough 150gr Partitions that run right at 2900fps to last me for a while.

As for the comparison between 270Win and 280Rem, a couple of things need to be kept in mind. Because 280Rem was originally for a somewhat weaker actioned auto loader the SAAMI pressure limit for it is 60000psi, while for 270Win it is 65000psi.  Loaded to the same pressure 280 Rem is 100-150fps faster, depending on bullet weights.  The speed difference is larger for heavier bullets than for lighter ones.  Overall, loaded to the same pressure 280Rem with 150gr bullet is about as fast as the 270Win with 140gr bullets.

Oops - I must be blind!  You did include the 260.

7-08 140gr 2950fps 2700 ftlbs  @100 2660fps 2205ftlbs  @300 2140fps 1590ftlbs

.270 win 140   2925fps 2695ftlbs  @100 2667fps 2211 ftlbs  @300 2152fps 1495ftlbs

I load for the hornet but not too many members would be interested in that one but the 308 or 30-06 would be interesting to many I should think.  Some folks choose a lighter, faster bullet for its flatter trajectory.  In my hornet, for example, the slower, heavier bullet has a flatter trajectory and shorter flight time at ranges beyond 150yds or so and higher striking velocity and energy (depending which bullet style one compares).

Koshkin, you bring up some good points, too.  One thing we always need to keep in mind, is that it is nearly impossible to completely duplicate every variable when comparing loads. Bullet weight vs. velocity is relatively meaningless if we ignore chamber pressures when making comparisons, which you allude to.

Even when comparing two bullets of the same caliber and same weight, but different manufacturers, one may be able to reach higher velocities before exceeding pressure limits, simply because of such characteristics as jacket hardness and/or thickness, bearing surface, lubricity of jacket material, and on and on.

in this table i used info from  the same company in each comparison so if the first load i picked was from federal the .270 i was comparing it to was also from federal, some of the data is from remington and some is from winchesher(wsm cals)

i will post more comparisons as they are requested.the .308 i will add the 30-06 is already there.

pyro, the only 280Rem 140gr load from Federal that goes 3150fps is the "High Energy" load, and I thin they discontinued it anyway (I have about 20 boxes of it though).

if you want to be fare, you have to also look at federal's HE load for 270Win which has a velocity of 3100fps with 140gr TBBC.

So from this, we can conclude that the .270 is the stellar performer you've been preaching about all along and we should all own at least one, if not two... right, Mr. O'Connor?!!!

you would be correct there ilya, there fastest current fed  140 gr load only goes 3000fps but hornady's light mag loads will go 3150fps.

For al the reasons ILya stated, I really like the 280 over the 270. Granted mine is an Ackley. I don't think anyone could muster up a legitimate agrument that the 280 would "outperform" the old 270, certainlyas far as field results are concerned anyway. I also like the bullet selection in the 7mm class more so than the 270. Just my 2c.

i agree with you roy that no deer or person would know the difference in the end, but on paper  even a 100 fps edge means a victory in my book. the ackley steps this up even more and its to bad more ackley imp arent readily available in mass production cause some of them are real neat.
