Here is a very imformative thread in regards to the Savage with great info from Hot30 down in the firearms section. Might want to wait a little while on this purchase. Savage rifles offer alot of performance for the money and are a best buy dollar for dollar IMO. If you decide to go with a Savage make shure it has the accutrigger.

probably a question better asked in the firearms area. i like remington but that accutrigger savage uses is nice too and i imagine the savage is cheaper than the m700 is i guess if i were you i would go to a store that sells both of your choices and shoulder them and spend some time seeing how they feel, cause nothing suck worse than a gun that doesnt feel right, so i would start there, of couse the m700 is totally customize-able so there isnt a shortage of people and companies that make aftermarket parts for it, im not sure that the same holds true for the savage. thats about all i can tell you.

Savage offers a lot of bang for the buck and from what I have seen are accurate. I like Glock triggers and the Accutrigger because of this. The Savage is cheaper, also. The Remington costs a bit more and is a nicer gun. The fit and finish are better and it looks better. I have several Remington's and they are all moa or better. Regarding customizing, the Remington wins hands down as there are far more M700's out there. The new Remy trigger is very nice and if you find an older one, are easily adjustable. Take the time to handle both and see what feels good to you. Too bad rifles aren't like pistols where you can rent them to shoot at the local range. The .308 is generally an accurate choice in most rifles and the Savage and Remington are both top choices. Ditto on the firearms section.
Good luck on your choice, Doug Edited by tahqua |

Hi guys,
I must be missing something? I have a couple older Remington's and they are nice. I'm not impressed with the newer Remington 700's quality but they're still a nice rifle. If I were starting out, I'd go with the Savage. They're more accurate out of the box and they are getting better about getting after market parts for them. The nice thing about Savage is you can buy threaded and chambered barrels and install them yourself. If you want a different caliber, just change the barrel.
If it were me, I'd get a Savage in 30/06, Get a Boyd's Thumbhole Varmint stock for $85 unfinished, and a E Arthur Brown Barrel in 6.5-284 for $259 and have a real 1000yd rifle. The 6.5-284 is the caliber of choice for 1000yd Bench Rest shooters.
If you take a good look at Savage, They are coming out with some real nice Target / Varmint rifles.
Catch you later,

Hi again,
Savage is now making 308's with 30" bull barrels. How's that for a long range 308?

The new Remingtons 700's have an adjustable trigger; so, Savage and Remington are equal there. The only thing I dont like about Savage is were they put the safety. To me its impracticle to put it under the bolt. Everything I have heard about Savage was positive yet same goes for Remington. Ultimately the choice is yours. I suggest you take PYRO666's suggestion into consideration and shoulder the two rifles and choose for yourself.
On a side note: try doing a little research on after marcket accessories for the two rifles and then cross reference your data with other web sites, gun stores, etc. Becuase if you ever plan on customizing your rifle this research will tell you which brand is right you. |

I have both a 700P .308 that has had adittional gunsmith work including Impact Guns accuracy work and GAPrecision installing Badger detachable magazine and a Savage Accutrigger 10FP 20 in .308. I have recently seen a Savage 10FP which has a factory detachable magazine system and HS Precision stock for sale for about what it cost me for my installed Badger system. Other models come with McMilllan or Choate stocks all ready to rock & roll for not that much money considering the cost of a custom gun. Dollar for dollar I would say go withthe Savage Accutrigger gun. If you have 2k + that you can drop in a rifle dont buy either --- buy a GAPrecision custom sniper rifle and enter a whole new world of being able to actually hit what you are shooting at - at distance, or buy a Tac Ops gun the sheer mention of these two custom rifle makers is likely to cause the enemy to surrender.
At distances under 300 yds I would go with the 20 in Savage 10FP at longer ranges I would use a longer barrel and a GAP gun. Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd |

+1 on the Tango51. I am a a Remington man all the way. I can't think one accuracy gunsmith who didn't cut his teeth on something built around a 700 action. The Savage do have a reputation for accuracy, but I just can't warm up to their looks.
