does anyone have any suggestions where to find a readily available rod suitable for lapping 1" rings? diy wouldn't be that hard would it?

Try your local machine shop or tool and die maker.  If they do not have a piece of scrape, then they can get you hooked up.

are 2 sources, among others, offering them for sale, and include the lapping compound with the kit.

 

Both are less than $50, so you're not likely to have one made for less than that.

thanks for the input guys but on second thoughts, i probably wont use the tool enough to warrant buying one, so its probably cheaper to just take it to a gunsmith to do it??
