How much variablility is there in quality of the same model scopes?  For example, are all Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 scopes equal; within 5% of each other?  I know that the better the scope, the less variability there should be, but how much is there, really.  I think the Burris Euro Diamond 2.5-10X44 I bought must have had some problems, because it did have near the image that my Black Diamond 2.5-10X44 does (I sent the Euro back to Burris and they said it was fine).  Is there any way to answer this question?   Maybe Chris could open all his boxes and check it out for us

I have six Zeiss Conquest that appear to be carbon copies of one another.  I have seen two 1" Docters that were absolute crapola but the last two that I have seen have been fabulous.  I think certain brands and certain lines within those brands have much higher quality control standards then others.  Leupolds seem to be pretty uniform and the Burris scopes that I have had have also been.  I expect that a Bushnell 4200 Elite would be pretty standard across the board quality wise, while I have seen some low-end Bushnells that were hit or miss.  I think the biggest problems lie with companies that brand label scopes and the first batch is made to high standards in Japan, they build a good reputation and then move production to the lowest bidder in China.  The scopes will look identical, but they are not even close in quality.

It took me a few days but I finally have finished opening all the boxes and checking them out for differences.

All manufacturers very in their tolerance allowances and you are correct about the higher end units being tighter with their specs.  I have been told that the human eye can not detect the differences from one to another on the higher end brands.  Bad units do slip by inspectors from time to time so it is possible.  I think you will be fine as long as you stick with a brand that is known and has been around for a while.  Stay away from new companies, especially those who are manufactured in China.
