Hi Guys -
i am on a hunt for a new rifle ( i have no idea why, as i don't need it ) - but i have found a sako trg-s in a 7mm Weatherby Mag - that i can get for a good price.
is this too much gun for whitetail and is it accurate enough for serious target shooting?
i will probably put a target scope on it that would have the lower magnification for hunting bean fields.
tell me why, other than cost of loaded ammunition, i should not get this gun.
thanks in advance. I had a 7mm MAG that i hated because of recoil and muzzle blast - it killed you to shoot it.

i am not worried about the trg-s sako's - i have used one for years in an 06 - it's the best gun i've ever owned. shoot's like a dream.
that guy obviously didn't like his, he is in the minority - but the m995 action in the trg-s is hard to beat, custom or not.
just the chambering - is the 7mm Weatherby Mag a good round?

about a 200-300 fps increase over equivalent 7 mag, more of same. if the gun is used, you may want to check the throat first for excessive erosion.

The 7mm Wby is a good round, but unlike the other Wby mags, the 7mm Wby case capacity and load data doesn't show a very significant velocity increase over the 7mm Rem Mag to justify the increased ammo cost and reduced ammo availability to my way of thinking. If you handload, this is less of a factor. There is nothing wrong with any 7 mag on whitetail deer with the right bullet. Yes, it's certainly more than needed energy-wise, but it isn't grossly out of proportion to deer. As for it being a "serious" target shooting round, that really depends on how accurate the rifle is and what your definition of "serious" is. In that rifle, I wouldn't be surprised if it was extremely accurate. It wouldn't be my first choice of chamberings, but I see no reason why you couldn't find an accurate load for it. Barrel life will be relatively short if you plan to shoot it a lot.

The 7mm Wby. mag. is an excellent round, but a RF stated, its increases over other 7mm mags are not as sig. as other Wby. rounds, but there is definately and increase. Good choice of bulltets. Since I have been reloading, I have purchased very little factory loaded ammo and that includes Wby. cartridges. So, if you reload and the price is right, I would go for it. I once had the opportunity to buy the same rifle in a 30-378 from www.cdnninvestments.com for 499, brand new and passed it up. Great action. I would check for throat erosion, but in my opinion, having owned many Wbys., this is problem is over rated for two reasons. The first and foremost, is that Wby. calibers are hunting calibers and very few of the rifles are ever shot enough to suffer from the problem, no matter how old they are and the second reason as there is generalized belief that at 1000 round the throat erosion is sufficient enough in most calibers to cause problems. Having researched the issue, the actual number is probably closer to 2000, before hunting accuracy is affected and there have been many documented cases where a Wby. magnum barrel has seen 5000 rounds with only a slight loss of accuracy. These were all Wby. brand, or made for Wby. brand barrels. Nevertheless, it is a wise idea, always, with any used rifle purchase, but especially with a Wby. magnum or any other over bored cartridge, to check for excessive throat erosion.

yeah, the cost of factory ammunition is ridiculous - so handloading would be a must -
but, i don't really have time to handload - too many other irons in the fire.
thanks for the input guys - as much as i want another TRG-S, i may pass on this one.
if anyone is interested, i will pass on the info - he only wants 575 for it, which is a steal.

Remember, Lazzeroni stacks the deck even further than most cartridge companies when stating their ballistics. All of their testing is done a 3000 feet of altitude and while they state with a 26 inch barrel, I have heard on other forums, that some of their data was with 28 inch barrels.

Jon, I would still consider this rifle as the 7mm Wby is a great cartridge. It doesn't out perform the RM by much but if you do get the time to reload the longer neck is a huge bonus. It's not something I would shoot a lot and for hunting use twenty 20-40 rounds a year down the pipe wouldn't be a severe hurt. You can look around for good ammo prices on the net and that will help.
