please explain the useage for a base?  I will be shooting a 10fp in 308.  I have a 30mm scope now I will use for the mean time until I save for something else.  My thought on the new scope will be the SS.  I plan to use it for hunting out to 200-300 yards and practice long range targets.

HMMM They put three of them in a diamond shape out in the field to help you find your way back to home plate when you are playing baseball.

What do you mean explain the useage for a base? It is simply the part that attaches to the rifle that the rings attach to. Now the more complicated aspect is that it can be flat or angled plus .20moa. etc which changes how the scope sits in relation to the axis of the bore allowing you to have more adjustment to correct for long distance shots.

Want good bases and rings buy Badger.

that is what I was getting at the different styles of bases (and not the diamond ones).  All my previous scopes have not used bases/mounts.  Rings straight to the rifle.  With high rings to still be able to use the sights.

Is an all in one mount and rings better than the mount and rings seperate?

Names of decient quality on a limited budget right now.  Under a $100.00 then I can save for better ones down the road.

Ok that makes more sense now. If you have been using the weaver see thru rings you are first of all missing out on having a good cheekweld which makes a huge diffenrence in repeatable accuracy. Take a scope lay it on a flat surface outside and move your head aroung watching where the cross hairs point. That should explain why you need to have your head in exactly the same place every time you shoot which is why people want the scope close to the barrel. As for rings and bases that are not extremely expensive the Warne rings and bases are steel and while not as good as badger they are solid.

Damn, that DM program is something I still don't get!

No base?  Only M-14's and accuraized AR's?  With most bolt guns, the base is the part you bolt on to attach the rings (of which you know) to the rifle (also, of which you know.)  Get a good base - don't go cheap.  Others will recommend their favorites, I have had exceptional success with Badger.  yea, they cost a Lotte more, but "you put a $100 head in $100 helmet."  I don't want my gear crapping out at the worst possible time, and I've never had a Badger mount or ring let me down (something I cannot say for anything dovetailed or Leupold Mk 4s.)

Rancid - do you remember the walmart weaver rings that look like the number 8 and dont need an additional base - they screw to the reciever and have a hole to look at the iron sights. Thats what he has been using, everything is an improvement over those. And for a  guy who's last set up was less than ten dollars eaven the standard leupold rings and base is a big step up.  TPS rings and base may be out of his range and Badgers are eaven more but I second that the Badger is the setup to have.

Yea, I didn't mean to come off harsh, but he's a fellow Marine, he can take it.

I wasn't aware the DM program didn't have more familiarization or variety of weps, but I guess that isn't its purpose.

8154, take Ufriend's advice, he won't steer you wrong.

not a problem.  I am just starting to get back into shooting rifles except for hunting.  The Savage 10fp I am getting will be the first rifle I bought.  have several different calibers at home now but nothing on this scale.

Yes the DM program is alot different than the SS program.  I went through it in 1994 in the first offical class the Marines had.  M14's are what we used.  More of our training was on range estimations and presicion shooting.  The gear was given to us completed.  All we had to do was clean it and load it and shoot it.  It taught about shooting and windage and elevations but not much about the rifle except for the chararistics of the M14.

They rifle I was using has open sights and i made a cheek rest to raise my cheekweld to get a good alignment.  Mainly I was looking for do you need a 20 MOA base and what other advantages would be to have one or would a base and ring made out of 1 piece would be better than rings and mount seperately.  Money is not a real big factor but anything over a 100 i will have to save for.

I appricate your help

The 20 MOA base is necessary with some scopes not made for long-range - as in any scope with less than about 80MOA total adjustment. the 20MOA base helps get back that elevation range that you never use.

A 1-piece base is my preference in that I've never seen a 1-piece base that had allignment issues - which can be a problem with 2-piece bases.  If the 2 rings, once mounted on the base, aren't exactly aligned with one another, you can torque your tube and really screw things up.  If a 1-piece had bad hole alignment, it won't mount to the rifle and you cannot damage the scope.  With 2-piece bases, there can be hole-alignment issues and inter-ring alignment issues.

My recommendation would be the go with a 1-piece of decent quality and rings of the same.  Starting out, Badger will be somewhat unnecessary but will be nice down the road.  You will notice quickly that upgrading little things in stages can be very effective.

For the money, right now, get what Ufriend recommends - the Leupold dovetails will work.  And start saving for Badger down the road - or TPS.

Good luck.  And rememeber: tracers work both ways!

Leupold Standard rings and base set up usually works alright but I have really punished some and had them fail, also I am not entirely happy with the two screw adjustable windage on the back end set up as it is more parts to go out of adjustment especially with heavy recoil.

Rancid

I just bought a 20 MOA base for my Remmy 700 PSS and Super Sniper.  Just in case I see any targets at 2000 meters
