I have decided to get a better set of Binoculars.  I want a pair to use hunting in Virginia for Groundhogs and Deer.  Also a pair that will be practical for general use like High School Football and such.  I am looking at the Nikon Monarch ATB binos in the 8X42 or 8.5X56.  The price range is right for these two, I want to keep the cost under $500.00.  I am leaning toward the 8.5X56 pair, but am a little concerned about size and weight. Any help would be appreciated.

wfolds, hello and welcome.  I am and avaid hunter here in North Carolina and I have had the Nikon Monarch ATBs myself in 8x42.  They are pretty good glass for the money but there is better glass out there in the under $500 range.  I stepped up to the Swarovski SCL 7x42 myself like those on the samplelist here.  Its more money then you may want to spend but when you get the best you don't need to worry about buying anything better.  If I were you and you had the chance I would go somewhere that has binoculars and try out several brands and see what fits your eyes and confort level the best.  Good luck in your search.  In your price range I would like to suggest the following:

Leupold Pinnacles 8x42

Bushnell Legend

Bushnell Legend II  New out this year but very nice glass for the Money

Vortex has some nice optics out for under the $500 range

Pentex SPs

Zeiss Conquest in 8x32 or 10x32

I'm not going to give you any more recommendations on which pair, but I would recommend the 8x42 power as oppsed to the 8.5x56.  I own pairs of binoculars, both of which are 8x42.  I too was concerned by bulk/weight and find these perfect.
