I hunt in mississippi and we now can hunt with a chosen few single shot rifles instead of a muzzloader during primative weapon season.I am going to get either a 444 or a 45/70 caliber in a new england handi-rifle.I'm looking for some feed back on these two calibers.which would you choose for deer hunting.

i dont know about the 450 marlin but i will check.the rule is it has to pre 1900 single shot with exposed hammer.all i have seen is these handi rifles in 38/55,45/70/, 44, 444 and a 500sw.the 500 is a no go because of recoil-buddy of mine has one of these and you can taste blood after just one shot.

Try the 45/70..You can get Buffalo Bore ammo loaded to 450 Marlin ballistics ( maybe even a pinch more ) or use milder generic stuff. Plus the new Hornady fodder will work great. Throw an ATI collapsible stock and it'll look cool too.

The website is www.atigunstocks.com. I put one my oldest's first deer rifle a few years ago ( 30/30 Handirifle) and recently on my youngest's 410 H &R , and each has worked great in  providing  an adjustable length of pull.

Throw their name on a google or yahoo search engine ,and retailers will show up.Plus, grab their optional buttpad.
